This is going to de a disaster for Golf in NZ. The average age of your local Golf Club member is well over 58 and I would contend that they make up the vast majority of the Golf TV audience. Speaking to many of them at the local Golf Club most have only just managed to master Mysky and when you say iPad, Apple TV, Air Play to them their eyes glaze over. Even if the grand kids set it up for them it is just not as easy as turning on TV and flicking through the sports channels. If the live feeds are as flaky as I get on the PLP on 100 Mb fibre,thoses that try, will give up very soon after.
My pops is 70 and misses his beloved golf. At the moment were using a Toshiba Satellite laptop and a long HDMI cable. The laptop loses Wifi connection regularly, once reconnected the video from PGAtourlive doesn't automatically continue. Not helped by a 'connection error' message where the video timestamp used be ie you can't see the hour minutes seconds of when you were viewing. We got a CX-919 smartdroid HDMI device, loads and runs the PGAtourlive app but only gives a few seconds of video then returns to the schedule page.
I was keen to sign up for the golf (mainly to follow Lydia Ko) since I couldn't justify Sky in the past when I don't have much interest in too many other sports.
Sadly though, the Coliseum support people tell me my broadband speed is too slow
I was a bit surprised as I thought my broadband wasn't too bad. I hardly game now but used to have no problem with iracing which was usually on US based servers, and I didn't have too bad a ping playing Battlefield either.
If I do a Spark speed test choosing Wellington I get about 10 Mbps download speed
When I use the coliseum speed test from their website choosing New York as recommended, I get about 4.5 Mbps
Apparently they say the minimum needed is 7 Mbps
I am in the suburbs, not in the wops, on ADSL 2 - so not fibre or anything, but just kind of surprised, is my broadband really that much below average? I suspect not, and if so it means a lot of customers are being deprived of golf viewing in NZ now. Pretty crap situation really.
I guess I could sign up and see how bad the picture is, but really if I want to watch a fuzzy pixelated mess at 360p I can just stream it, although given most tournaments have the final round on Monday morning NZ time, without the ability to record, live streaming isn't much use anyway.
Interested to know if many others have not signed up, or cancelled, or are unhappy because picture quality is poor due to broadband speed
