richms: Ive seen on my other computer that after long time playing video the CPU multiplier was dropping down because of thermal stuff. Not sure what you can look at for that on a SOC system since I was using the gigabyte software on the mobo in my tiny case.

CPU multiplier can be seen in real time using CPU-z.

this is what i think. something / a few things are on the limit, so when the limit is crossed it stops streaming properly. these are the things you need to rule out

server system: CPU, HDD, antivirus scanning your file access, virus limiting your network, some other thing limiting your network
Pipo: CPU, HDD, antivirus scanning, virus, network, GPU, virus
router: dropping the stream off an on (i have a Voda HG659 wifi which does this a lot on the original firmware, does it much much less on Spark firmware but still does)
something else i havent thought of

What power plan are you on?

Change your CPU in power plan to be minimum 100%

Perhaps it's set too low (probably not though)

Nah, unfortunately not. One of the first things I did was change every setting I could find from energy efficient to maximum performance.

It is actually a gateway device that provides a 3g wireless connection to RBI broadband as well as local wi-fi and ethernet. The brand is Huawei, not sure of the model. I can look it up if you think that is really important.

An ethernet cable runs from the gateway to the computer room. Another runs through the house to a TP-link router. This provides a wi-fi connection to the problem computer, which is only about three meters away. It also has an ethernet jack. I have tried both. It makes no difference.

The ethernet cables are Cat5. Our RBI connection speed has a theoretical maximum of 10 Mb/s. Actual speed may reach 8Mb/s. 4g is unlikely to be available to us soon so Cat5 seemed adequate.

I have run every test I can think of with this connection. Desktop in the computer room has no problems. Other computers in the other room also seem ok with both wi-fi and ethernet. I'm not expert enough to say for sure, but this doesn't seem to be a connection problem.

if it always starts out fine and then deteriorates then it is most likely overheating and throttling ... like other people have suggested.

Might be why mine was fine, its sitting in the outlet air of a PC power supply out in the open.

Following chains of links led to here.
There is a bios setting to reserve more ram for the gpu.

Go to UEFI bios -> chipset -> north bridge -> intel IGD configuration -> and there you find the entries "gfx boost" and you can decide the amount of the ram reserved for the gpu.

Was dealing specifically with silverlight, but may help you too. Guy set it to 128 and it was much better when streaming apparently.

Major thanks guys. I have to take time to digest this all properly. Can't do it tonight because I have been drowning my sorrows and I need to have a clear head. Tomorrow I will be away but after that...

Some of this is on the edge of my capabilities. I played with the BIOS in the beginning but then heard about people bricking their units and was afraid to touch it after that. I also saw the info about overheating and installed a health monitor but my CPU temps never seem to go over 30 degrees so I ruled out throttling. Also, the case does not feel especially hot. However I now wonder if I was getting correct readings. When the unit slows, everything crawls so maybe the temp displays are not updating.

I may try to pursue a claim with the Chinese supplier over this. If so I cannot make any modifications. I can open the unit though. There are no seals on the screws. What do you think if I open it and put a CPU fan on it as a temporary measure just to see if it makes a difference? Is this sensible to try?

Special thanks to joker97 for researching this and providing the links. I really do appreciate it.

I will keep you all posted on any results but it will be sometime next week.

Throttling is a bios algorithm that if defective prevents the cpu from ever getting hot so your performance is crap.

The multiplier on cpu-z should tell you it's throttling.

If not ... Just get a refund

This is getting over my head as I have never played with overclocking but the multiplier should be 10 to achieve the rated frequency of 1.3 ghz yet it was actually 6 when the computer slowed and the cpu failed the diagnostic test. At other times it went over 15. I don't understand this well enough to know what significance that has.

At this stage I would like to get a refund but the Chinese supplier is trying to deny any liability so it will be a battle. Mainly I just want to get the thing to work if at all possible.
