Kiwifruta: There was a long weekend. I'm not at all concerned about the number of days it took to reply to the email. Just happy that Trustpower are now using Netflix Open Connect Appliance.

Just for the clarification, the presence of a Netflix OCA doesn't improve the experience of non-New Zealand Netflix catalogues.

I realise that. My point is Trustpower have done what is within their control (i.e. NZ Netflix) to provide quality Netflix streaming.

Good Morning

As with most providers we are not able to guarantee the speed with accessing the NZ Netflix catalogue but are monitoring usage and making changes to our network to ensure the best experience possible

UFB does have a higher capable throughput speed then ADSL and we would expect your experience watching Netflix to improve but as each setup varies we cannot guarantee this. The CIR for our residential UFB service is 2.5Mbps Download and 2.5Mbps Upload but this is for the connection itself, rather than for video streaming specifically.

We also recently removed the traffic management policy on our No Data Cap plans, which means we do not place any artificial speed restrictions on our customers (Customers on a capped plan will still be throttled should they exceed their monthly allowance and choose not to purchase extra data)

Please bear in mind when Network congestion occurs (particularly when something unexpected happens like a network backbone outage or unexpectedly high traffic to a particular website) you may experience some slower speeds, but we will always provide you with the speed we can deliver in the circumstances. I will pass on your comments regarding Trustpower’s presence on Geekzone to the relevant team.

What speeds should we expect by using the Trustpower network to stream the NZ Netflix Catalogue? Will it vary across ADSL and UFB?

I’m on unlimited ADSL and am in the process of switching to unlimited UFB. I have read there is a CIR, or minimum guaranteed bandwidth, for streaming video on UFB. What CIR does Trustpower use for streaming video?

Traffic has to be specifically tagged high priority to take advantage of the CIR. When traffic is untagged (99% of traffic on most ISPs) the UFB CIR is 0 (so worse than what Chorus is obliged to deliver over copper).
