Dirt cheap skinny phone gets my vote. Useless for anything else but this sort of thing.

deadlyllama: Why not a $50 android phone attached to your wifi? Or one of the rubbish sub $100 tablets?

Definitely this, will be more reliable as NZME could change the URL to the stream at any time whereas the iHeart app will always work.

I plan to get a pi for this if I can get it working, but curious how an android phone would work. Assuming it could connect via my ISP, how would I get the audio
into the amp/speaker ?

And just leave it running 24x7?  As I assume you can't get something to control it, to say choose another channel?

As long as you have wifi a phone would definitely work with your ISP.
Whether you go Pi or phone you'll need the same cable, probably one of these.

same way, 3.5mm plug to the amp input - same as the pi.

It's a phone. You control it on the screen of the phone with the I heart radio app.

First time tried this sort of thing..  eventually managed to type in the same Url as comp (http://www.iheart.com/live/Coast-6193/?autoplay=true) into Chrome
on the mobile. Then an invite to get a free iheart app.  But some Google thing kicked in wanted paypal or  credit card so I wasn't having a bar of that.
I presume the pi would not do that, but just connect (like the pc does)?  i.e. no App needed ?
Thanks.

David, I have successfully burnt the image onto the SD card.

Haven't plugged it into the pi yet as not sure what to expect or do next.
Any pointers welcome!

I have got your coast.pls file but don't see a /var/lib/mpd/music/WEBRADIO folder.

Thanks.

A PC can't see anything on that sd card. Once the Pi is running you ssh to it and operate on it then.

In XP I see nothing, but the laptop running win 8.1 (where I burnt it from) was showing one folder and a pile of files, including a readme.

>Once the Pi is running you ssh to it and operate on it then.

So I put the SD card in the pi and power on?  Can you tell me what to expect (to see) and what "ssh" is ? Thanks.

Depends on what distro you put on the card, some will boot to a graphical login screen, others to a text one. At least one I looked at booted straight to a desktop.

ssh is how you control it remotely from another computer. You will need to get the IP address that the pi gets and then use software like putty to connect to its ip address. Use whatever login and password is the default for the distribution you have chosen. Should be listed on where you downloaded from.

Ok I can expect it to boot,  Thanks !
I can already see the pi on the LAN via windows explorer..  but not sure if it'll stay like that when this SD card is in.
Time will tell I guess. LOL I have to be quick as pi is wanted by rest of the family for media streaming.

Can anyone tell me what - how - comes next  with this thing, please?  Or where to find that information ?

I booted it up and screeds of printing on the screen (and even a few chimes!) but then nothing - just  a prompt waiting for input.
The keyboard doesn't work though and neither Windows Network Places or Putty can see the pi.
So sort of at a dead end.

I'm sure there was a getting started guide on the volumio site.

But essentially grab a browser and browse to the raspberry pi ip address, then you'll get the volumio interface.
