Yes I knew it was a torrent site but haven't thought about it'd upload it back. I know if you download stuff from utorrent etc it'll start seeding unless you cancel the option. Popcorn time looked like you'd stream it online like any other website without seeding it back

Like some other commenters, I haven't used torrent since the new law - to be on the safe side. However I do download from Usenet which I believe is not P2P and so not covered by the legislation. Can anyone confirm that please? And do others go to Usenet too??

The thing with BitTorrent is that (quite apart from the seeding aspect after you've finished downloading) it's peer to peer so you're actually always sharing pieces with other users and they are sharing with you (i.e. it's not just from seeders to leechers). In a sense, you're always uploading. That's just how it works.

NZ Copyright Law covers file sharing. If you are only downloading from Usenet then you are not sharing and not in breach of the file sharing section of the copyright act.

No, but some content rights owners do, and they can & do chase these down illegal downloads.
They arnt stupid , and there are companies setup to that will, for a fee, go monitor the usuall download sites & usenet sites and track down the downloaders

In an interview I heard with one PPV provider , he organised for illegal downloaders from certain sites to be proscecuted/fined . He said the owners of these
certain cites are more than happy to hand over all info of who was downloading what, just to make the private investigation go away.

Good to know. I've been using it for years for TV downloads. That's mainly been superseded by Netflix/Hulu now, but there's still the odd show you can't get on either - or can't get all of. Tends to be more obscure and not the latest hit stuff, though, which is easily available by legit services.
