Noted - I haven't found any apps it breaks yet. I thought it might affect the Citrix app I need to use for work but OK so far. I guess I could always bypass if required

The big win is when travelling with family - instead of configuring up to ten devices to work on the hotel network, you just need to do one setup on the router

Also - if you are Android, wouldn't a Chromecast be a better choice? Smaller, lighter, more portable etc and better integrated in the OS

I would have thought so. Neither have local storage anyway, and the chromecast has a better app selection (than a ATV3 - which you can't change, ATV4 is getting to be similar) better pricing (CC $69, ATV3 $169 and ATV4 starts at $299).

Chromecast needs a travel router and another device to act as a remote (3 devices). So it's more like $150.

ATV just works with its remote - seems simpler but maybe login will be a PITA?

Another simple option would be a micro USB to HDMI adapter, if your phone supports MHL. No remote so you'd have to get up to change the channel like some sort of barbarian out of a history book, but would be cheap, easy to transport, and save mucking around with network infrastructure any more than necessary.

Actually, i think you could add a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard for remote controlling that sucker too.

Any reason why this wouldn't work?

I was about to say yes but then remebered that I've only tried this a couple of times, and in both cases the TV screen resolution and my phone resolution were the same (1920 * 1080) so not sure whether it scales properly or not. Google seems to say that is will up to 1080p, but YMMV there. And having looked it up, apparently you need an 11 pin MHL adapter for an S4, but that seems to be a good thing overall (doesn't need separate power).

SD card for media, has 2.4 and 5g wireless and then just get a small remote keyboard.

Use it at home as my media pc as well, has no problems playing netflix, neon etc. Also fine with media and vlc.

Oh if you do look at it now make sure you get the Z3735F the z8300 was really bad at doing anything and had no end of trouble with it (got it for a friends birthday present and then spent 2 weeks trying to get it to run as good as the z3735f).

The Intel PC on a Stick or the ASUS Chromebit might be a good option if we're going down that route. I've got a similarly-specced Minix Neo box which is quite good, but the sticks are far more portable.

If I get something with bluetooth I can use my phone as a keyboard/mouse. One less device.

Apple TV definitely do this, and actually pull the content directly from the net.

NFlix is on the device itself (all the way back to ATV2) so you simply log in once ON the device and then can either use its remote (or a remote app) to control it directly OR AirPlay to it from your phone.
