grolschie: If it's not, then why do they actively disable screen casting on Chromecast?

All I can think of is this. They are happy to provide ways and means to view on a TV. App, Airplay, etc. But of they cannot or will not support an ATV4bapp or Chromecast, they are being told not to support Apple or Google directly. Maybe in favour of other manufacturers, who want it harder to view using Apple or Google, so you buy or use the other manufacturer product. They support iOS as they have to given the numbers. But to me, its all about supporting some manufacturers over others.

  Some of the airplay/chromecast/miracast/other solutions break the content provided rules when it comes to end-to-end encrypted/protected path.  Not sure if this is the case with chromecast, but it definitely causes problems with the android miracasting.  Perhaps the player tech they use doesn't have the required 'driver' for the protected path.

Surely a bunch of it much come to development costs.

On Demand on a certain brand on tv, was TVNZ and samsung.  As I believe samsung paid for the development, hence the reason it was exclusive on there.

The addition of airplay over apple tv, is again problably development costs, i guess they figure well you can get it from IOS devices, why spend the money repackaging/redeveloping the app for Apple TV, when we can spend the money on the web, android, <insert other device here>

That's of course assuming that there's no rights restrictions in place the stops them, but I wouldn't think so, as surely local content they could do what they like with, it'd only be overseas content likely to be affected.

They seem to have spent a lot on that aweful freeview plus platform that still requires a coathanger or other piece of metal to pull signals out of the air to even do anything. Huge waste IMO.

TVNZ encourage people to Mirror their Chrome tab on a PC to watch it on their TV, if they do this I don't see how it could be a licensing issue, unless they vary for mobile devices. (They blame rights restrictions from preventing HDMI-Out or mirroring from a phone)

But even this isn't as nice as Native Chromecast streaming, is less smooth etc unless you have a great connection.

Lots of people are complaining on their Facebook page about random devices like Samsung tablets and Windows 10 app no longer working.

I don't think they understand how bad it is and how it drives people to the competition or to pirate.

Building apps for all the devices sounds great - but realistically there are a lot of devices and they often need different apps.  Sometimes certain agreements lock out other platforms too - e.g. some Samsung exclusives blocking app availability on LG TVs etc.

You seem to be a little misinformed as to what a chromecast is. It's basically a browser, sent a small HTML5 app which plays video via <video> tags. It has some JS code which communicates with the smartphone which casted the video. Although it can do it, generally it is *not* just displaying the screen of a phone or PC. It was built from the ground up to be compatible with a variety of DRM schemes, and probably the majority of chromecast-compatible apps use DRM. If there's an apple TV app for TVNZOD/TV3OD, there's no excuse for there not being a chromecast one too.
