The Expanse is on Amazon Prime US if anyone felt the urge to give it a trial.

I'm waiting for Star Trek Discovery.

From what I can tell it will be available in most countries, but not Netflix USA.

For once it looks like USA consumers get forced to watch with Adds, and we get the option to pay to watch without the adds, or not forced to do another way if wish to watch add free.

Looks like some US TV companies are making programs and then showing them on TV in USA, and selling rights to Netflix for other regions. Why they have the Netflix original in program not sure, maybe made in partnership with TV studio.

The Expanse looks like in NZ been sold to Sky, season2 8.30pm 8 February Zone channel.

In a lot of cases "Netflix Original" just means they have got exclusive distribution rights in the region.  It does not have to mean they produced the content.

MikeB4: Netflix like all businesses are there to make a profit. If selling the rights in a particular market gives them a greater return then it is logical to do it.

Yes but then then shouldn't have used the "global catalogue" argument when they went to so much effort to block people accessing other country's content then.

It's a slow process, we could be a few years away from global catalogues.

Clearly but my point was why were they justifying having to segregate access to each country's catalogue due to rights holders not allowing global rights when they are not leading by example with their own content?  Yes I realised they would have inked such deals before they were asked to clamp down but they shouldn't be preaching what they don't practice themselves.

It sucks that we miss out on The Expanse.

You didn't miss much it was just an OK show

I still saw it, just not on Netflix. I thought it was excellent.

I generally watch US Netflix, but was having a look at the NZ catalog the other day and noted that NZ has at least 3 "Netflix Original" shows that the US doesn't have (Designated Survivor, Shooter, Dirk Gently).

Netflix has gone on record many times about how they want to provide a single global catalog, and that it is the rights holders that are preventing it. If they truly want a single global catalog, surely they should start by including their own original content to all regions?

Does anyone know why they are not?

As an aside, how are you accessing US NF from NZ?

EDIT: don't worry, seen what you are doing in another thread.

Seconded - it was amazing. And for those still using Sky, second season starts on the Zone on February 8th - glad I saw this thread to remind me!
