I am big ST fan so this could be of interest.  I have the first seasons of TOS in HD (one on HD-DVD and one on BD).  They were the ones redone with new SFX which I think is just fine.

The PQ is pretty amazing but given that they were filmed on 35mm film (which still exceeds HD quality), that's not surprising.

Not sure if setting it in the past is going to be an issue. After all Enterprise was set in the past also and was okay.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

I just couldn't do Scott Bacula as a starship captain. Much like Chris Pine......the kid who commands a starship like it's the First XV.

But both Bacula and Pine have aged well....and I don't mind either of them as much as I used to. Pine was almost good in Wonder Woman.

B5 S3 and most of S4 were awesome..........

I remember reading about the original pilot in an Amiga magazine, soon as it was released I hired it and watched it - GFX for the time were brilliant (all done on Amiga) but the story and acting was horrifying....  but somehow they got approved to make S1 and off it went.... thankfully things improved :D

Let's not start up on which ST is better, for sake of those in the thread who want to discuss the topic :)

Babylon 5 and Star Trek being mentioned in the same post should trigger PeterReader

(waits for PR to chip in with "I actually prefer B5".....)

I'll give the new ST a look, but none have really interested me since STTNG.

Star Trek Discovery went live on Netflix at 8pm this evening, have to say I am very impressed so far.

I'm guessing the Director must be mates with JJ Abrams ? (Lens flare)

The reviews I read on IMDB (those that weren't just moaning about the fact that American's have to pay to see it) were mostly along the lines of nice visuals, bad story and dialogue, very politically correct with every minority crammed in. But I'll give it a go tonight; like The Orville I might be pleasantly surprised.

Seems to me the plot twist is starfleet are the nosy bad guys. The Main starfleet protagonist wants too strike first, kills firsts, and invades private property. The klingons are coming across as the good guys in this.sealed

Best in-joke of the series so far - turn on closed-captions, there's subtitles in Klingon!

I am not a massive fan of ST, however, I was keen to see if this would peak my interest. I agree with @murraym the visuals, massively impressive, but the plot, acting etc was exceptionally average. Bordering on poor. I was thinking about the minority thing as I was watching, they have filled their "quota" that's for sure.

If the story and acting don't significantly improve, I'm out.

I found the Klingon full face prosthetic too wooden and their movements when walking too restricted. Not consistent with a warrior culture.

Will happily continue watching nz Netflix.
