Senecio:

Spotify consistently feels like it's playing local media, it's crazy.

Unless you're using Spotify connect to a system that supports it, or playing a song for the very first time you're more than likely to be playing from local media. Spotify downloads a local copy to your phone even when streaming and it stays there indefinitely. When you download an album for off-line listening and delete it later, it doesn't actually get deleted either, just hidden. Its how Spotify reduce the demand on their bandwidth. Storing as much as possible on our local devices. If you're using and android device you should have the option of clear cache but on an iPhone the only way of deleting the downloaded media is to delete the App and reinstall it.

I'm not talking about playing cached songs, I mean searching for random keywords then clicking a random song in the list of results. There's no way that's cached.

Also, the Android version absolutely deletes songs when the cache is full. Otherwise it would fill it every device which uses Spotify. Also you can delete the cache in spotify options. I just checked.

On my phone it's using 4GB, which is hardly unreasonable.

I have a car head unit with built in Pandora support. Is there any other app that is able to take over the Pandora functions? Or have Pandora locked things down tightly?

As so far I haven't had much luck with normal bluetooth streaming reliably starting and stopping when the head unit turns on and off with the car.

I never got the email, but Pandora told me today on the station they were shutting down. I can't be bothered with VPNs and such.

Google Play Music is what, $12 to $15 a month? Not worth it to me. I guess I'll try Spotify free and put up with the ads. I found it a PITA last time I used it, I like the Pandora model, playing music it thinks I like. Can Spotify do anything similar?

Yes. It'll generate a Discover Weekly playlist, based on what you listened to for the last week. It also allows you to create stations, which can be based on an artist or an album. It'll then play music similar to the chosen artist/album.

I loved Pandora's algorithms for finding new bands to listen to, but I've been pretty impressed with how well Spotify does this too.

Been trying Google Play Music.  We need to move away from Spotify for the family because it doesn't do any language filtering ... google play has the option to do so on stations so there are no "surprises".

So far, the app generally works better and has the same basic features as Spotify plus several features which Spotify is missing, eg. you can sync "stations", like and dislike songs so it can build a better picture of what you like, location based suggestions.

And you get Youtube Red included.  Nice.  My vote is now for Google Play Music.  I have the other members of the fam trying it out on iOS to see how it works for them.

I'm trying google music too. I get 3 months free with my Samsung phone.

At the moment it's annoying me by playing cheap knockoffs of the music I like - eg tribute bands.

Google Play Music for me is instant with switching tracks (on Android) and on my desktop once the client is loaded it is as fast as anything to play / switch tracks etc. What I like about GPM that Spotify or Pandora (didn't) do was cache songs ahead of time. For example, when going through a long train tunnel here in Wellington my music doesn't drop - it'll keep playing up-to around 3 songs ahead.

Other irritations:

On browser I want a full screen player with an album art image or something similar, like you get on android/iOS apps.

When I'm listening to a station, and I click the YouTube symbol on the player bar, it will flip to YouTube and play it (it's always much quieter -grrr), but then at the end it goes back to the player on pause, so I have to get up and unpause it to start the music again. And turn the volume back down.

I want more settings:

Play Just The Video I Select, then go back to the browser player.
Always Play Video If Available For A Song
Only Play Songs That Have Videos.

These would be good ways of capitalising on the tie-in with YouTube Red.

I've tried the little widget thingy. If that went full screen it would be perfect, but it's fixed size.

So it seems that pandora still works on my echo's however I now get the awful US ads.

I will be sticking with spotify.  Over the weekend I transferred some playlists over to google music to try out however it seems to drain the shot out of my phone battery and also bricked my android wear watch after installing play music on it. Watch would not start again (even recovery was stuffed, dead android screen).

Not working for me without using a VPN or dns4me.com. Getting the "not available in your country" message. I see it's disappeared from the Google Play Store as well.
