Install the actual correct android speedtest above don't count on indigo being accurate its surely using some far away server.

I was trying to get an indication to see why there was such a difference, but the accuracy isn't really the issue. The issue is that browser streaming works much better than Kodi streaming. There is no question about that, regardless of the measured speed. I'm just trying to figure out why Kodi is so much worse on every platform I try, regardless of version. What I keep coming back to is the quality of our Internet connection, though I don't really understand how that is affecting it. I will be intrigued to see what happens when I try a different ISP in town.

How well does it stream content over your local network?

I ask as the ethernet implementation/nic on some of the cheaper chinese kodi boxes can be a bit rubbish.

so might be wort testing local network transfer speeds - as well as ethernet via usb to see if it is the ethernet in the box or not

and to make sure its not kodi addon/stream related - how does it stream say YT?

Anyway.....if all else fails....I can recommend the Shield for a bullet proof solution - or MiBox for a pretty damn good solution at a very keen price.

I tried a couple of cheap Android TV boxes initially and just wasted my time trying to make them work reliably and they were a complete ballache to use. I am so much happier with my Shield and Mi Box.

I get the same result on a variety of platforms (2x Win 7, 2x Win 8), not just the Android box, so I don't think it is that. I have thought long and hard about a fancy solution like Shield, or even Apple TV or Roku but if the problem is our Internet connection none of that would matter and I would just end up spending a lot of money I can't afford. But I like the idea of trying one of my systems elsewhere to see how it performs on a different ISP. That should answer the question once and for all. It is just a matter of getting around to it. Maybe tomorrow on my tablet just to see what it does.

If the issue is with installs of kodi preforming badly, but streaming through a web browser is ok, then the issue is either the Kodi installs or something on your network affecting these Kodi streams. If you have Kodi on a Windows box start wireshark and get a capture might be something simple

I think you should start at your router, is the firmware current? is you kodi device conected at 100 mbit not 10?

Is the internal firewall on or off? is Qos enabled / Disabled?

The other thing that can give the impression of crappy streaming is, Do you have the hardware to support things like H264 hardware decoding.. a lot of the cheap kodi boxes don't! so check video acceleration

What I have noticed in the past is Kodi doesn't appear to buffer much data when streaming.

My windows PC will buffer around 10 - 15 seconds worth of data so if there is a small slow down or interruption to the data stream, it has a 10- 15 second window to catch up before I would notice.

Kodi, at least last time I played with it, only appeared to buffer about 5 seconds worth. So was more susceptible to fluctuations in the streaming data rate.

Yea, it has a pathetic buffer. Paused and restarted a vid last night and it buffered every time.

There is a way of extending the buffer. Youtube has the info.

I think I have learned enough to come back to this. I have gone through our router/gateway device (Huawei B315) and don’t see any issues there. I believe I have also eliminated Kodi as the source of the problem, as well as our equipment.

It occurred to me that the Google Chrome browser has an extension for native HLS playback. I extracted the link for Sky News UK, which is one of the ones I have trouble with, and tried playing that. The result is pretty much the same, with the live stream constantly overrunning the buffer. This suggests to me that the problem has to do with the way HLS is streamed, though I have no idea what that would be, and not with Kodi as such.

What I keep coming back to, though I still don’t understand it, is that my damned RBI connection is the source of all my woes. My speed tests all say that the connection should be up to the job. Speeds vary a lot, but go up to around 30-35 Mbps, and usually reach at least 15-20 Mbps, though with occasional brief drops. Maybe it has something to do with the way adaptive streaming works. My RBI speed does jump around a lot.

Anyway, I would like to thank all of you for the suggestions and for thinking with me on this. If anyone has any other ideas about how RBI might affect this, I would be very interested to hear them.
