Mi Box from Ali Express

US$70 plus free shipping.

I have bought 8 of these and all users are happy with them.

Just make sure you get the International model.

No you got me there. Those (Android) apps only seem available on smartphones and tablets.

There are plugins for them on Kodi and they are fine.

Thanks for that :)

Obviously the 4th gen is the one to go for but dont think they'll want to shell out on one, so maybe a 3rd gen - anything I'd have to be aware of with a 3rd gen ? Or any of them actually, would a gen 2 run the apps fine as, or is it outdated now ?

Appears everything is Gen 4 only these days..... damnit.... :D

Yep, the Gen 3 has apps, Apple apps. Probably fine if they are i to Youtube and baseball. Gen 4 has "any" apps that people develop. NZ wise, we have everything except TVNZ OD which I think has just come out.

It is possible to navigate by tapping near the edges of the touch pad. I find this easier than swiping.

Or set them up with a Harmony 650 remote - AppleTV works fine with a Harmony.

The navigation features also work fine with the remote for my Bose Lifestyle System, but unfortunately the play button on the Bose remote doesn't seem to work with the Apple TV which really irritates me so I stick with the Apple remote.

Seriously, if your folks are a bit tech averse (or, like mine, will ring you when anything different pops up on their screen), get the ATV4.

$249 will save you a lot of tech support hours. It is Apple, it looks good, and it works.

For future proofing, the 5th gen maybe the better option for 4k, and potentially maybe supported for longer by apple for ios updates.

I would second this, it's worth investing a little more, and get one of the older remotes without the swiping to make it easier.  You can get them on Trademe for about $10

Apple TV 4 is absolutely the winner here now there is a TVNZ app. Agree about the remote though
