Spotify + Google Play Music do adaptive streaming. If you're on a 3G connection it'll often stream at a lower quality vs a 4G connection. This is why I chew through so much data but my car audio system deserves the best quality it can get.

Sorry I thought you meant on a plan or flex pay plan. well that sounds good value to me and hard to argue with.

What head deck and DAC do you use?

Im thinking about upgrading head deck, I run off a quad DAC in my phone. dont get me wrong the pioneer is nice but its interface isnt what id like.

Im looking at one of these http://www.kenwood.com/nz/car/visual_navigation/dmx7017bts/

Yes, I should have added that.

I set streaming to Auto so it use lower quality and less data. Downloads are set to high quality so if I want to I can use a better quality version by downloading over wifi.

I might have to swap from google music back to spotify and use this.

I wonder if instead of upgrading to one of the Kenwood navigation and av receivers Im better off keeping my pioneer and seeing if there is a holder for the iPad and using maps with spotify in the background. I suppose 9.7" is too big to have on the dash though.

So many darn options.

What head deck and DAC do you use?

A Pioneer MVH-Z5050BT along with Focal Expert speakers, a 1600w Fusion D-Class 5 Channel amp and a 12" Soundstream sub.

Since the head unit is connected to my phone via USB / Apple Carplay (not Bluetooth) audio quality is very very good:

I use both soundcloud and spotify at max quality over data.

Things that i like, i sync. but i'll often just go through generated playlists for more content while driving.

ontop of this, i often stream casts etc on youtube, 480p. Go through a realistically affordable data plans doing this.

That excludes my heavy ingress play that can easily clock a few gig.

steve98: Streaming music doesn’t even need a particularly fast connection

Yes it does, when I fall back to H+ and am streaming, it often cant keep up, on 4g its perfect. My china phone has no band 28 and from home to work its prettymuch fine, but driving around more whopwhop areas its often on h+ or 3g and stuttering like crazy. Note 4 fine on the same drives.

Also fantastic Fridays, on my vodafone sim i just use them, every friday data and voice deals (never text thought), like 60c for 120mins etc. You could survive on fantastic fridays outside texts.

I now have my china phone down on $10 worth of stuff from the plan chooser, get the 500 megs bonus because I linked it to a facebook account with a studenty age on it, and then add the music pass, and that is enough for me on that phone for $20 a month.

These days I keep nothing on my phone unless I'm going overseas. I stream everything from music to YouTube/Plex. All my photos backup on the go to Google photo (videos backup if I'm on wireless). Only use wifi at home everything else is 4g on 2degrees. I'm on their 25gig plan and currently have almost 70gigs of rollover.
I have never gone over 12gigs in a month yet but for the price of 25gigs I like having the safety net of knowing I can go a little mad once in a while. I also find it great way to find new music something that would never happen if I kept music on my phone.

Current favourite at the moment is Onuka
