That's ridiculous. We are 20 km from the mast and have had consistent download speeds of 50 Mbps in the past, more recently 25-35 Mbps. That isn't the problem. The problem is that it sometimes goes to hell, presumably because the mast is overloaded and gets congested. Other than that our Internet is better than most urban fixed connections that are not fibre.

You don't have to be far rural for that to be true! I only live 20 kms from Invercargill but I can't even get RBI, yet alone ADSL. Luckily we've got a local provider of fixed line wireless.
Only 20km You are aware 20km is not just a hop skip and jump walk around the corner!

It's not ridiculous as more users come on board the speed is going to degrade and then the school / university holidays happen!

Rough location..
I can't help from our side.
Just remember while a tower is capble of doing 100+KM, it's far more typical to be 20KM or sub particularly when you get to macrocells.

Not rediculous you are in a Rural area with lots of Hills, Valleys, Trees, Overhead power, large iron impliment sheds, bodies of water, electric fences and so on..... The environment is viable as is the usage.

Again, you are pontificating on something you have no knowledge of. We have near LOS all the way, no overhead power lines or large iron sheds in the vicinity, good signal with little interference. Since the gateway device was replaced and the firmware upgraded we have had no problems with signal strength or quality. Any issues have to do with overcrowding at the mast end. Our signal is now always steady four bars. Right now rsrq -7 db, rsrp - 103 dbm, rssi -77 dbm. These move around a little, but not much. Your comment that we should only have dial-up speeds is as ignorant as your comment that cars can't backfire. You don't know what you are talking about, not that that stops you.

20km is at the limit of the cell I would say! They don't set them up to coverage massive distances

The issue you will face is around cell breathing. With more clients connected to the same radio or panel as then you run into the issue that your traffic gets deprioritized as you are all using a shared medium.
What makes things even worse is if there are a number of clients there that are poorly configured such as those right on the edge of the coverage area and don't have a properly aligned antenna and that effectively nails your experience as the site is busy running cycles to a marginal connection.
You really need to speak with a tier 2/3 network engineer that can take a look at the site and see the other connections onto the site and see what is going on.
Since this is so hard to troubleshoot and diagnose you may struggle to find someone to fix it unless they are here on Geekzone and happy to help you.
Thank you very much for that information. It helps to clarify some things and that is always good, even if I can't do much with it. Not being a networking expert, it gets frustrating when I keep bumping up against things I don't really understand. I don't think my antenna is one of those causing problems because my stats are always pretty solid now. At the moment things are right on the edge of acceptable. If they don't get a lot worse, or it improves again over time, I will probably just live with it and hope for improvement in the future. My original post was mainly just asking if this was a wider issue at the moment or specific to my connection.

only thing is, it's not called cell breathing on LTE..
Prioritization is still there though, it just doesn't do the whole reduce here and increase here stuff.
VCBLB is really the closet and that applies to LTE-A, OP is using a b315 ;)

Acceptable internet seems so important to you. Have you thought of moving?
The first thing I do before moving house is look at internet capability of possible new properties.
The other thing that seems to be happening a lot is communities are banding together to lobby to get better internet access and in same cases paying for the access to be provided. Doesnt Shane Jones roam through the rural heartland with bags of cash to offer trees and better broadband? Your neighbours are probably pissed at this as well.
But do talk with someone meaningful in your ISP first.
