That is good to know. I guess. At least I'm not alone. What I don't get is that people keep saying I should use Google Home to set the Chromecast up, but all I get is crap about devices I don't have, like speakers. How am I supposed to use it to set up Chromecast?

Google Home, in my use case, provides a view of all castable devices in the network, only one of which is a 'cast-enabled' device, all others are Google Home speakers or Chromecast dongles. I suspect checking in here should confirm it's suitability as a cast device in it's current configuration. I use it for configuring / changing my Chromecasts and Home Speakers, but have not used it for the cast-enabled TV. Perhaps checking these devices on the app in your case may (or not) reveal what is going on behind the scenes?

I have only a Chromecast to use with it, named Living Room TV. I see it once it's been added:

Did anyone ever see that Southpark episode where the Internet went down and Stan fixed it by rebooting it?

Nvidia support gave me some suggestions, including resetting the Chromecast built-in app. I had looked at it before but was afraid to disable it without knowing more about it. Anyway, I followed their instructions and Chromecast was working again when I restarted.

I still don't understand anything about the Google Home stuff, but it is possible my Chromecast would now appear on it. Anyway, as long as it is working I have no wish to pursue this any further. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. They are always appreciated whether they solve the issue or not.

What instructions did Nvidia give you?

The Chromecast on my Shield has stopped working. Devices can see it but when you cast to it nothing happens.

You have to reset the app. Clear the cache and settings, disable, re-enable. After that it should work.

This is from the email they sent me:

Also, please try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

--> Go to settings --> Apps --> Chromecast built-in --> Clear cache, clear data, Force stop, Disable and then Enable --> Restart the SHIELD TV --> Test the functionality.

It is important to restart the Shield. Otherwise the changes won't take effect.
