Hiamie:

I had Sty TV when they didn't play adverts on it. Or if there were adverts, they were only played between programs, and not during them. I guess if you have a mysky box you can skip them though.

Yes I remember that. I even purchased my first sky decoder outright rather than rent it. In those days Sky TV had about 5 channels only, but they were all good, and there was little or no adverts.

Nowadays Sky TV offers dozens of channels but there are still only a handful of worthwhile ones to watch! And sadly, those are full of adverts throughout.

To me, that's a a step backwards not forwards.

No wonder I left Sky TV.

I recall that was when they broadcast over UHF, which I recall was early to mid 90's. They then wanted everyone to then upgrade to their satellite service, which is similar to what it is today, where there are heaps of channels, but the quality isn't there, and I recall it was more expensive as well at the time to upgrade. I think we just ended up cancelling it after that.

In a civilised society, one asks permission before addressing a stranger by name. Ads that do this are presumptuous, rude, intrusive, impolite, and disrespectful. I would make a point of remembering any ad that did this to me so I could be sure never to buy any product of that company, and to recommend to all I know to do the same.

OldGeek:

The reality is that broadcast TV is a dying medium.  The whole model of broadcasting free-to-air (FTA) for viewers with funding from advertisers is a technology and business model whose time is now past.  Broadcasters such as TVNZ and TV3 cannot adapt because the business model of FTA cannot adapt while they remain as broadcasters.

FTA broadcasters have been replaced by narrow-cast services (such as Sky) and internet-based services, all of which required paid subscriptions to use, and viewers are migrating to these services.  The only way FTA broadcasting will survive is that the cost of operations is funded from non-advertising sources.  While I have not watched BBC broadcasts for some time, I understand this is an example of where FTA viewing is headed in NZ.

except TVNZ is adapting and profitable with significant growth and investment on the VOD side and potential paid services down the line. Yes it's going to get harder but ad supported TV isn't going anywhere in the next decade and will be supplemented by other services. That being said without the heavily discounted programming they get via NZ on Air neither would make money but the stats behind that cost vs growth in those areas(tv/film production) makes it a great investment.

Also don't seem to watch much FTA, but I find ads considerably more annoying when the program skips instantly to an ad instead of some intermediate card thing they (used to) put up in-between.

Given TVNZs tenuous financial position I am not surprised they are trying to strengthen their revenue streams. The options would be a subscription model or a license model, hark back to the 60s and 70s.

I never got that throwback ideal. One has a name why not use it.

Yep it's not like my name is sacred and secret.  No point outraging over something you agree to in the T&C.

Different culture, different perspective. No-one reads the T&C. Do they really say your name can be used as they wish?

Ignorance isn't a defence in court, why should it be in your consumer dealings?

I'm not pleading ignorance, just curious if the use of names really is specified in T&C as you suggest.

And he deserves a bonus, because he is not just ignorant, but willfully so.

We use a technology called ad personalisation which works to use information you have provided to us (such as name or gender during registration) or other information we collect about you (such as your IP address) in an advert that is shown to you, or users, of your TVNZ OnDemand account.  For example, you might see an ad on the website addressing you by name, or offering goods or services near your general location.

Was actually quite difficult to find, had to start the registration process, it should really be listed clearly on the site...

I actually find TVNZ VOD reasonably acceptable. The content is not bad for such a small organization and the ad breaks are much shorter than on live TV where they account for around 15-20 minutes every hour. Their content is much better than much larger broadcasters such as UK channels ITV or Channel 4.

One thing that is annoying is that the volume of the ads on TVNZ VOD is sometimes a lot louder than the programme, something that was complained about for live broadcasts a while ago I seem to remember.

TBH I could probably survive with just 2 services. BBC (including IPlayer) and another for movies. I could even do without the movies while Alice In Videoland still survives in Christchurch.
