PhantomNVD: My old appletv2 still works fine still also, so basically ANY AppleTV will do if you get one from trademe 👍

This  has got me wondering, ‘cause there are lots of 2nd gen, 3rd gen for under $100 on the mighty TradeMe. For those of you who swear by Apple TV for ‘casting’ can I ask what version you are using please?

A 4. That’s the only one with an actual App Store. Otherwise it’s a similar experience to a chromecast. But a little tighter integrated. I think the built in Netflix still works. But YouTube might be gone. Basically you can’t really choose the apps.

If budget was an issue for the OP, does Airplay work the same, and as well on a pre ATV4?

Yes.  But if I had limited $$$ I'm unsure if I'd choose an old Apple tv over a chromecast.   Probably a chrome cast for the (very) odd occasion when I'd want to cast from a browser.

Maybe if an old apple tv 3 was $50...I'd go for the Apple tv.  As for $69 you can get a brand new chromecast

I have Apple TV 4th Gen. retail around $250 new. 32gb model is fine, don’t bother with the 64gb.
It has access to apps for streaming ( Netflix Lightbox Disney ThreeNow TVNZ Amazon etc) without the need to “cast” from your iPad.
You definitely won’t regret it.

plus I could sit and watch the screensavers all day. They’re stunning.

Yep to the above, and as well as having ALL NZ apps, they get updated, whereas the Smart TV will begin losing the apps over time

I went from an Apple TV 3 to a new ATV4 this year.

Night and day.

The ATV3 still works really well and you can AirPlay without any issues, but having dedicated apps just makes life so much better
