One thing that really annoyed me aboutt he TVNZ app was that it doesn't have an easy QR code login. I use long passwords with a password manager and with 4x SmartVU to configure with like 20+ character passwords.... :(

richms:
I tweeted about it sucking and had so many apologists for a crap service DM me. "but its free" "Theyre only a small broadcaster" "Looks fine on my 32" tv to me" "I don't have a home theater" and other weak crap.
There’s the problem - we see/hear it but the majority just don’t care. So there’s little incentive or pressure to change anything. Pretty much all of our friends are in the uncaring majority. Same goes for Neon.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
I find the picture quality terrible on ThreeNow, even on my ten year old 42" TV. Recently I pointed it out to a friend while we were watching something together - she had no idea what I was talking about.

This. Of all the apps I have, only TVNZ+ and ThreeNow ask for a password. Like yourself I use a long password with uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols. It's a pain to enter this password on new devices. Why not have a "login with web" and show a code for this?

That was the tweet that started it. Easier for me to go into plex and play a transcoded stream from piracy than to go into tvnz and play the legit stream when I wanted startrek when I was in my shed on the junky monitor and soundbar where TVNZ would be tollerable.

I use 1Password via my iPad or iPhone. I open up the relevant TV app login screen, open up my iPad or iPhone > TV
Remote > it automatically picks up the TV app login credentials screen and offers up 1Password to fill in the login credentials > done.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
Will they fix the Apple TV app that keeps crashing?

Thanks for sharing so other people with Apple TV, iPad and iPhone can see how it works. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for the larger portion of people who are not invested in the Apple ecosystem. Some remote control apps exist for Android but I am not willing to use something that is not from Google directly.

Just tested the new Android TV remote control functionality. It doesn't work with TVNZ+. The cursor never goes into the email and password fields so you can't copy and paste anything while using the phone as remote control.

Following edited from the press release
The rebrand is part of a multi-year digital transformation for the broadcaster, as it focuses on redesigning TVNZ for a digital future.
This evolution of TVNZ OnDemand is firmly aligned with TVNZ’s ambitions for a digital future, creating a streaming service that will serve all viewers in the years to come.
TVNZ+ is a modern brand that tells the story of TVNZ’s goals and aspirations for the platform to be a market-leading streamer that can compete against global giants.
The new look TVNZ+ rolls out across all compatible devices from today.
So now what we have is a new TVNZ app (Android & iOS) [across all compatible devices] that has had a superficial paint job done but nothing really changed under the hood. No support for the latest modern screen resolutions or sound formats or remote control capabilities.
And this is meant to be "creating a streaming service that will serve all viewers in the years to come." and "be a market-leading streamer that can compete against global giants."
This is not TVNZ "focusing on redesigning TVNZ for a digital future."
All PR BS and no substance. What a shame ☹️

ThreeNow is shockingly bad.
Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.
OH CRAP we now have click bait ad's in the app. Select a program and up pops a tiny click ad.
TVNZ this is NOT good.
Is this YOUR digital future ?

TVNZ rebrands its On Demand service, updates on premium/ad-skipping plans
TL:DR - no premium option any time soon.
I'm a bit baffled that they're not planning to offer a premium option. They've been talking about it since something like 2018 and still seem to be no closer to committing to it. Unfortunately they're a slow-moving company that seem scared of taking bold decisions and embracing technology. I imagine they've done all sorts of market research and have come to the conclusion that there isn't enough demand to make it worthwhile. To me, that's them being unable to make a decision so they're using data to answer their questions, to solve their analysis-paralysis. Sometimes you need to look at what is right in front of you and say "damn it - if we build it, they will come!" I'm reminded of the Steve Jobs quote "People don't know what they want until you show it to them. That's why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page."
I thinking they're looking at what they earn in advertising through On Demand and have decided that paid subscriptions need to earn enough revenue to make up for people not watching ads. I'm thinking they've asked people what they're willing to pay for a premium ad-free service. If people are saying, for example, $5 a month and TVNZ is thinking something along the lines of the cheapest plan on Netflix or Neon would be what they need to charge to break-even then that may cause them to rethink offering a paid plan. Of course, nobody is going to look at TVNZ and say "Yeah I'd pay the same as Netflix". TVNZ needs to prove to the public that it's worth that much. This is just my conjecture/speculation. But I think TVNZ needs to start offering the option at a price closer to what the market is willing to pay. These services always increase their fees, TVNZ can do the same. Make a little loss while they're building it up.
The name TVNZ+ is really just rebranding. They'll have done market research and found that people think TVNZ OD is only for catching up on programmes that TVNZ has already shown free-to-air. TVNZ OD offers more than that so they're switching the name to something that has already cemented itself in the public perception as a streaming service and what they perceive that service would offer. So they go for the recognised + suffix.
When TVNZ says it is "focusing on redesigning TVNZ for a digital future" I don't know what the hell that means. It sounds like marketing speak. The "digital future" is a term that keeps coming up when they mention the merger with RNZ. They haven't said what it means or why they need to be merged with RNZ to achieve it. All they seem to know is that digital is the hip thing everyone is into, so TVNZ needs to "be more digital!!" Which is a pointless fluff term if nobody but the marketing department knows what it means.

Ahh good. So not just me thinking that then.
Everyone else is doing it, we should too!
