Forgot you will need to add the cost of the premium for the voucher. This usually brings the cost up to about the NZ itunes cost. For example a US$25 iTunes voucher may actually cost you around US$31-33.

It's very easy to setup and the speeds are not affected since the solution is not VPN based which halves your download/upload speed but a DNS based solution and it works a treat.

This service will not work with any ISP which uses transparent HTTP proxies (cough TelstraClear cough), because the proxy will perform either a second DNS lookup, or a reverse dns lookup on the IP in order to get higher cache hit rates. Completely non-transparent, and completely not neutral.

Not sure what you are saying here re TCL since it tested fine using their cable modem service.

O.k. to be clear:

I paid unblock-us for 1 month's service (great service, great support, highly recommended). I then tried Hulu - didn't work. I tried BBC iPlayer - didn't work.

I eventually figured out that it was the transparent proxy getting in the way. The transparent proxy will re-parse any requests and perform it's own DNS lookups. Since unblock-us is primarily a DNS replacement, this breaks it.

It's completely not neutral - I've performed address resolution, the proxy shouldn't repeat it. I raised a ticket with TCL, and they didn't understand why anyone would ever want to perform their own DNS resolution!

So, I cannot recommend paying for Netflix/Hulu/etc when using any other network with a proxy, and expect unblock-us to be able to get around the region coding.

There are ISPs that don't use transparent proxies, and unblock-us does work with them.

myopinion: Well it's horses for courses really. Pay a little and get crapo content, pay more and get good content. I don't see a problem with that. We currently pay between US$2.99 and US$3.99 for a movie and 99 cents for a TV episode on US itunes. That's pretty affordable in my book.

I haven't checked recently on what the latest content is but Hulu+ is US$7.99/month and it has some of the lattest TV shows, usually the last 5 or 6 aired. And they are unlimited once you have an account. So 8 purchases from iTunes and you're at the same price as Hulu+.

Are those prices from iTunes play only or purchase?

VUDU charges US$2.99 for SD movies, $3.99 for HD movies (720p) and $4.99 (1080P) for a one time view.

Of course there are some wrinkles involved. Hulu+ is of course US only but this thread is about getting access to US content. But more tricky is the fact that it only accepts US credit cards. That's a bit hard to get around for some.

I have also found for some strange reason you can navigate to a show on a portable device (I use a Nexus One) and when you try to play it, it says Web only. They have not got a licence to stream the show on a portable device yet. Maybe for Android they feel that the platform is not secure enough so somebody could write some code to capture the stream?

Unfortunately Hulu+ is not on my ATV2. Those prices are for rent only.

It is available on the iPhone and iPod Touch if you go to the US Apple store. But content won't play on the iPhone (error US only) but play fine on the iPod Touch (using unblock of course).

Well works fine for me on TCL cable. And this is for Netflix, Hulu+ and Vudu. I made changes in the router if that makes any difference. I don't use a proxy but of course who knows what TCL does?

I tried unblock-us last month on TCL and it was intermittent. I thought it was just that unblock-us was no good but it seems from the other responses here that it's TCL's problem. If I have a chance, I'll log a ticket and see whether I can get anywhere.

Yeah, it won't show up on traceroute, those are ICMP packets, and aren't intercepted by the proxy. You need a layer 4 traceroute to see it. On Ubuntu:

Can we stay on topic. I don give a rats a$$ on those numbers and proxies and hops...
I wanna know your experiences with Netflix and recommendations for Apple TV etc.
Seesm like Netflix isnt as great as it sounds...?
So they dont get brand new movies as soon as it comes on DVD?
Thats average.
I thought they got everything. But again for $13 usd (8+5) its not expensive at all to try.
I am with telecom. Will i have any problems setting up? Will i be able to set up easily? So just follow the set up on unblockUS?
And another question i asked was will this unblock US service solve my 3 strike law? YES or NO? not Kinda...

Netflix is great for those random indie/PBS documentaries which are more arts and science based.

Vudu is great for the latest DVD/Bluray Movie releases

Hulu+ is great for the latest TV shows.

There is a little crossover on TV shows between Hulu+ and Netflix but those are the basics.

I can stream Netflix just fine with about 3MB/s connection in central Wellington. The others work fine too. But if I use BBC iPlayer I have troubles irrespective of whether I use a VPN or a DNS based service.
