I know! I have been in this camp for ever! I wonder what stops them? They should release a better ATV (in terms of specs), keeping the price the same (this is critical) or build a Freeview version for NZ (Tui billboard anyone) and then open the app store to games and on demand tv content.... the games thing would poss kill Ouya...

I woudl wager that the Apple TV will have an App Store before long. iOS has it, OSX now has it, it will come

If Apple have an App store for the ATV, that would really open the unit up for multiple uses... My hope would then be live tv apps that can connect to servers for TV streaming (i.e. ARgus-TV; MediaPortal servers)... That would then allow full TV (freeview OR sky) and then decent on demand content... All via a reasonable interface...

Don't forget App Store means certification and curation, so anything that replicates existing functionality would get thrown out.

I'd expect to see apps like TVNZOnDemand, MLB.TV etc - the same thing you get on Smart TVs and Media Players. Live TV? How? Who would? Why would they?

Otherwise a similar set of apps as are currently available on iOS, but a lack of touch control means most would be utterly useless unless a controller comes out or they use your phone/tablet as controller, in which case why not just run them on the tablet and display on TV as they do now?

Sorry Wasabi, I meant user made apps for these... Certainly the app store on the ipad/phone allows these apps and there are some out there... It wouldn't take much for someone to add the ability to have the epgs and access to recorded tv from a central server along with official apps.

I don't know what has happened to the unified 10' UI that was gathering pace, I don't want to have different boxes that I have to switch inputs for if I can access it through apps.

I see on their FAQs they are saying that if game is ondemand it is only until next round starts. There goes trying to see a game later if you have been on holiday or just haven't the time that week.

thats kind of annoying I suppose, but really I cant see there being much demand for watching games older than a week, other than maybe a few classic games

I agree, I think the bigger issue will be how soon games are available on demand. Ideally they would be available within an hour or two of the game finishing, how feasible this would be however remains to be seen.

Maybe not, but you can't say you have a state of the art streaming service when it isn't anywhere near like the other sports streaming services.

But maybe I am just too grumpy about this. My biggest bugbear is that we have gone from a total terrestrial/cable/sat model to a total streaming service (with the 1 PR game a week on TVNZ). It should be a joint model otherwise you just get the same complaints but in a different way.

Well ideally they would be available from the minute the game starts. In the same way I can start watching a mysky recording whilst the program being recorded is still on, so I should be able to do the same with an EPL game.

They will be available from kick off, from the FAQ:

"The window for On-Demand games will be from kick off to the start of the following round"

IMO ondemand should allow start at any time after broadcast begins and seeking right up to the currently screening time. Not this BS ondemand from TVNZ etc which only becomes available well after anyone watching broadcast has seen it.

Youtube live works as things should for ondemand playback.

slightly off topic for a second but also read that nrl in australia have also got their own version of streaming to devices, tablets etc. wonder how long till they also offer that service here

for watching this through internet, we need fast internet , not a normal ADSL with handle that pressure, i use EUBA thats working great for me. high speed, high upload and download,
EUBA or VDSL is the option to go, good pricing as well.

As a referee in New Zealand who has refereed internationally, I can tell you I am not overly happy about this decision. (my background http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Kerr_(referee) )

The game in NZ gets very little coverage unfortunately. That's no ones fault and am not going to blame anyone but the reality is, in NZ, football does not rate highly. Now there is one way I get my fix and that's from Sky Sport or more specifically, MySky. For me, it allows me to watch games, watch incidents of note, review, learn, dissect and also incorporate these things into my game so what I am giving players/fans/stakeholders in the game, a better experience whereby I am not the focal point. Lets face it, who really likes the referee getting involved in the game unnecessarily?

Working in IT, I know how to get all of this if I want to but the reality is, can I be bothered? I have it all in one place and all I have to do is press record. Now I've got to get extra cash, pay for this, hook up that etc etc and I have to ask, can I actually be bothered?

I have no doubt at all that this is the way of the future and it is the start but I also question from a technical standpoint and volume of audience, is the market in NZ ready for this? I am not so sure.
