loceff13: Pity it isn't being zero rated afaik

Maybe because it is difficult to do. I still have unlimited data on all trafffic due to having a tivo, but I am not complaining.

Lazarui:

These days I'd rather my ISP be a dumb pipe. I don't need my ISP for domains, email, hosting, TV services etc. all I need is a pipe for my bits.

That is true, but many people do like services bundled. Sky used to be bundled on certain plans. ISPs need to work out ways to make money on higher margin services, as basic internet connections are relatively low margin, or they are if you believe what ISPs say. Not sure on the exact price paid for the EPL rights, but I would think that the large ISPs could afford it, and it is also great free advertising.

Is the free pass an ongoing arrangement (same with the 15%) or is just a one off with the 12 month contract similar to that of a free modem ?

I don't know, but suspect it will be one season.

1,000 free season passes ...

say 2,000 people buy it - you'd have a 50% chance of getting it

I figured the 1000 season passes were to be drawn before people pay, from the existing customer base who sign up for early interest, but who knows.

Not zero rated, no. But Telecom are upping and have recently upped the data allowances on plans (e.g. I've just gone from 120 to 150Gb)

Yeah I realize we have gone from 40GB to 150GB in 2 years with little change in price(but at the expense of a few once bundled extras). At 1.1GB a game(90min) for one month you will probably have to move up a tier etc in addition to normal usage.

It's info like this that makes me very happy that Slingshot have announced the zero-rating of the Premier league.

In saying that, my roll-over data is just going through the roof at the moment, so it'd be nice to be using a bit more data... :D

Typical,

You only get something worthwhile if a 'NEW' customer. And this is one of the things people always complained about with SKY.

I think this might annoy just as many or even more exisiting customers than they get new customers.

loceff13, is the 1.1GB per game for 3000kps speed games?

It can't be for the 3000Kbps as that over a 90m game, excluding any analysis is:

3000kbps = 0.366 MB/s x 90minutes = 1,977MB or just a shy under 2GB. If there is any pre/post match stuff then it will likely be around 3GB per match.

Slightly OT

MotoGP is now off Sky and on FTA TV3

What was quali, 3 races, and great commentary is now a 35 minute coverage. The main race itself is 45 minutes

Is this the FTA vs Pay comparison??

I would think that if you are off contract with Telecom, and you call their retentions team, they will sign you up to a new contract with the deal you want.

They did it for me when they were giving away TiVos and I was off contract - signed back up and got the free TiVo.

proper HD games are even worse , with the NFL game pass to watch one 3 hour game i use 6-7 GB of data and i watch 2-3 games a week, so thats 80 GB a month.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Every ISP does this. Every customer gets something as an incentive to sign up. The people complaining about this no doubt got something of similar, or maybe better value, when they signed up with telecom, maybe a free TiVo or 2 months free broadband.

I bought the NBA league pass playoffs subscription and watched a lot of games through that. It used 2-2.5GB for 2 or so hours. I was watching on 1600kps setting though as I found the playback wasn't that smooth on my htpc at 3000kps (watching on 32" LG tv via HDMI).

I watched probably a game every 2 days, when the Conference Finals were on I watched a game each day. I went through about 50GB a month for 2 months.

The picture and audio quality was fine for me, but was definitely better on the 3000kps setting. My issue was the playback had a slight stutter to it. I didn't bother trying to find the cause, but suspect it would have been my video card (could have been internet connection, but I am on UFB [albeit 30/10 not 100/50] and wired not wireless, so first guess would be video card).
