Benoire: It can't be for the 3000Kbps as that over a 90m game, excluding any analysis is:

3000kbps = 0.366 MB/s x 90minutes = 1,977MB or just a shy under 2GB. If there is any pre/post match stuff then it will likely be around 3GB per match.

1.1gb is so called "average" only

I can't imagine anyone would choose anything less than the top quality, otherwise they're doing the game a diservice... The bitrate was so much higher on Sky that I wonder if people will notice the drop, i'd imagine that those dedicated enough to footy would.

I would imagine that has to do with the Server being in the US and how many are attacking it at the time you are watching. I had MLBTV and it drove me mad when it swapped between SD and so called HD all the time.

Coupled with this is that watching sports online in US is only really done by those that live in a different city to the team in question. When people go on about how in the US there is a great movement to online viewing they are being a bit misleading.

It may be problem if you are used to watching in HD, but a couple of points

1) sky's hd stream isn't all that high quality. Better than this will be of course, butt not that much better. Comparing bitrate won't give you a for comparison since streamed video has very good compression to get the best picture out of your bitrate. Netflix HD is very good and only requires around 3Mbps for example.
2) only a smallish proportion of sky sports subscribers actually have a mysky,( maybe half?) so they are watching on standard crappy sky digital, likely via composite cable, which is rubbish.
3) even the ones who do have a mysky, and so watch via hdmi, only a subset of them actually have that HD ticket since it costs $10 per month.

So in conclusion, I don't see the situation being as bad as all that for most people.

Having said that, we are yet to see what coliseum actually put out. It could be absolutely rubbish.

I hope you are right on your first point because I fit into your 'subset' in your next two points. I pay the $10 for HD exactly to watch football in HD. I agree I'm not 100% of the market, but I'm at the leading end and where more people will be arriving as they become educated.

Still waiting to ditch sky, I decided on a second hand tivo to replace mysky.... but I realised I may still need to buy something for the epl app for my non smart tv. I will just wait to see what is being supported, if they name a recording stb that has the epl app I'll get that. And a second one for my granddad.

Apple tv would be best for me. Laptop is simplest but lacks an easy to use remote. Smart tv app would be fine, if my tv was smart (2010 plasma). Xbox 360 is noisy but would do for the 13/14 season I guess. Don't have ps3. Do have a wii u... finally something to do with it? My tablet is a surface, no ipad for airplay. Ipod touch too old for airplay. Wife's iphone, isn't mine, she will undoubtedly tell me. My android phone doesn't airplay. Maybe an xbmc app...

so many options but so few answers... I have a terrible feeling they are scrambling to get their platforms going (quickflix anyone?) and won't launch well. Aug 1 is too long to be uncertain!

I am in this space too. My Sky watching is now limited, and I can see the fragmentation of services causing issues for many, the non IT many. And even the IT few don't want varying devices, software, to watch 5 differing means of programming on the one TV

I suppose it depends on how fanatical you are about your team but If they had a monthly option would you take that up and if your team turns out to be bad would you stop after a while?

I guess if you are fanatical then probably not but I could see those that have a small interest dropping it when Man U or Man C are 15 points ahead by Nov.

Good question, but yes I am fanatical and would watch them to the end, will probably buy the season upfront to make sure I'm not tempted. Admittedly the last few games were very boring when we had nothing to play for and the players showed it on the pitch.

I think it will be ipad + appletv mirror at the higher end
Smart tv app on 2011 or later sony (and 1 other brand) tvs, and ps3, for medium end
low end ? Android tv stick/box with app preinstalled? Need something for CRTs though... (for the granddads)

I think that is why they not do monthly package as non fanatical but still fan of 1 team would maybe not buy the whole year. Other sports sites do 1 month packages so I think they will eventually have to do this. Though in saying that the timing of the games and the fact it is in our summer could potentially lead to a lot only buying a few months.

I still think and I maybe totally wrong here that eventually they will have to have some sort of deal or way of getting to the market who do not want to watch online or connecting a device to their TV. It makes sense to get all available revenue.

They need a standard platform. That wont work as there is no default standard among Apple, Android, TV manufacturers.

Will TV manufacturers make app dev possible so that any company, such as Colliseum can add an app? Not sure as from what I have read, TV apps are cool but they do not evolve much compared to Android/Apple apps.

To me, the standard has to be smart device apps from Google, Apple, Microsoft. Even then we need 3 STBs to cover this, three Apple TV-esque devices. While inconvenient on the surface, these devices are cheap. Oh, plus the HDMI switcher!

Then it is problem solved I feel.

My real issue here is the fact that I simply do not know what's on offer at the moment.

There's no concrete info on the website, there's nothing to show me what I should budget for and no way to know if there is a good/better/best option that will suit me.

Time-shifting is paramount as, although I am a football fan (somewhat obsessed with the round ball), I don't want to be getting up at 2am to watch my beloved Southampton be beaten by Chelsea or draw with Norwich etc.

If the cheapest option will not give me options to select matches an hour or three after they have played, it's going to be largely useless to me...and I am not going to ditch Sky to make up the extra cash, as there is plenty of other contant that I enjoy on that platform.

Not that happy with the lack of real info right at the moment.

The FAQ on their website does provide some direction about platform plans - quotes are:

How do I get it on my TV?
We're producing a wee how-to guide for this which will be ready when we launch, but in the meantime we can tell you that there's a few easy ways to do it, the most simple being to connect your computer to your TV with an HDMI cable which you can get at any electronic store. If you've got an Apple TV box or the equivalent, you can AirPlay (or the equivalent) through that.

Can I get this on my Tablet/Phone/Apple TV/Smart TV/Playstation/Xbox/other thing?
Initially we'll be releasing apps for iPhone and iPad as well as Android tablets and phones. We've had a lot of interest in Samsung and Apple TV apps so they'll probably be up next, followed by the game consoles
We're still finalising our on-demand offering with the League, but rest assured you will not have to watch every match live.

Will there be a chance to try this before I buy it?
The site will be live on August 1, and between then and the Premier League kick-off there'll be pre season programming up for free so you can test everything out.

I think the move to on-line will be challenging for the display based reasons others are stating. From the above I assume launch options will be limited to browser based Flash, iPhone, iPad and Android tablets and phones. I look forward to trying their free test options.
