I'm assuming they have some bigger backer behind them - like TVNZ, Telecom, VF or something. If it is just a couple of random guys (the two names there seem to be directors of Britomart, so could just be they are named directors to keep it anonymous, like theprivate buyers who bought Orcon)

It would be pretty interesting without expertise in either sports rights, the NZ market, or video streaming

ETA: maybe it's mediaworks lol, and that is why they have run out of money

hairy1: It even has EPL in the name: COLISEUM EPL MANAGEMENT LIMITED (from the companies page listing above)

yeah and was just created last month. one of the directors is also director of coliseum limited http://www.business.govt.nz/companies/app/ui/pages/companies/1494470 so obviously looks like a shootoff from that

Looking deeper at it's shareholder is coliseum sports media management http://www.business.govt.nz/companies/app/ui/pages/companies/3869656/shareholdings which is 50% owned by cooper capital partners which looks like where the money is coming from

But if Sky was outbid, the cost for Sky to screen it will be the winning bid plus margin, so can't really see that.

There's every chance that sky put a lazy bid in, as a monopoly they aren't used to serious competition and they could have been blinded by Colosseum from left of field (although they should've watched out for Sommet).

Wouldn't discount the option of Sky broadcasting it in the end - they have a massive infrastructure (cost) advantage over everyone else as they can sell it online or broadcast it to virtually everyone in NZ for essentially zero setup cost. I wonder if Colosseum have serious plans to develop a broadcast (online or whatever) platform, or if they are just hoping to make a quick buck out of Sky

Benoire: To be honest I have reservations for an online only stream. For a start I'd want it to be a high bit rate 1080i stream, with as little compression as possible. Think how much data that would use for a single match?!

i have Gamepass for the NFL and to watch a 3 hour game i used about 6-7 GB of data to watch it on the highest quality setting and it looked really good.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Quite a few people I know who watch EPL do so on HDTV and having to stream or only watch on PC is going to make them really angry.

As for me I just know that if I do subscribe the rights owners will have to give a guarantee I can see it in HD even if only online. If they can't guarantee that then no go.

This absolutely sucks. Shows how much sky care about their football customers. They have been using them for years. Remember when Sky Sport 2 was introduced on satelitte only and they put the EPL exclusively on that so that all football followers had to change to satelitte?

No coverage of the Confederations Cup or the U20 World Cup which NZ is playing in.

It looks like there may be no coverage of wimbledon either.

Why do I have the sport channels again?

I'm not at all a football follower and I really welcome this move because I am hoping (maybe naively) that it will start to signal to Sky that their days as complacent monopoly are being threatened - overall I mean, not just for sport.

Craig Heatley is behind this and he has street cred, cash and connections - he was indeed behind Sky TV when it started. His connections include Peter Cooper (from Cooper Capital Partners, mentioned above) - the now US-based mega-wealthy Kiwi who is behind Auckland's Britomart development and other NZ developments.

These guys have the clout to do serious stuff.

The problem is we dont have the population base to support 2 pay networks in NZ. i have Sky for the sport channels and thats all i watch, i like EPL but im not giving up sky sport as i can only afford 1, and i would think i would be in the majority of Sky Sport customers.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Sky didn't buy the 2013 MotoGP championship either. That's two major sports they're losing this year.

Going to the online, direct distribution model for MotoGP has been great. The depth of content available is far superior to Sky - you get historical races, all practices and interviews, test days, special on-board content, live timing during races, etc, etc.

One would hope the same will happen with EPL which can only be good for fans.

I guess they are seeing the writing on the wall, that with the UFB coming on line, this can now be a means of delivering quality content.

Such initiatives might be the impetus to drive UFB demand. One wonders if they run the risk of annoying fans who can't access it easily. Perhaps they may also resell to Sky or Sommet.
