I have a couple of tivi boxes and you address correct. You not only can save any programme to disk you a ghost shift it to any other format. TiVo with out doubt is the best pvr on the market tvnz just managed to ruin it just like they did with freeview boxes

You love the series too much and want to watch it over and over even when Lightbox has not renewed license for it?

Just don't get any streaming service and get it somewhere (e.g. bittorrent), that way you save money. But there is no legal way you can keep those video files unless you bought the original videos (e.g. itunes, dvd, cd, bluray, online) which makes it nonsense to actually DL/stream them.

Those players they were talking about that downloads their series? I am sure they have the license to actually do that but only in their app's premises. If you take out the video off their app, then it becomes illegal too. License cost money, if Lightbox were to allow it (if they can afford DL license on their app), you will still need to be online and subscribing to be able to watch those videos later. And yeah if they don't renew their license and they drop the series, I would assume the app won't be able to play your already downloaded content.

Such a dilemma.

Not true with TiVo you can export programmes to a variety of devices including PlayStation portable PS vita etc the one restriction is that you cannot export HD out forces it down to SD
I think Australian courts have ruled that format shifting is legal so I would not expect NZ firms digging a ditch to defend their rights to oppose format switching.

Those are expensive licenses and moving out of those will save heaps of money. Eventually, TiVo will go.

Not sure if anyone actually answered the question, so here goes: No. The silverlight player is designed explicitly to make it impossible to extract video from it.

Obviously, it's not "impossible". You could probably get a crap recording via screen recording. And, of course, there is no doubt a way to crack the encryption - but nobody has discovered it yet, and if discovered, it will be patched quick smart. This isn't a physical format where the exploits are unpatchable due to backwards compatibility.

So yeah - if you need to, just pirate it. Use a VPN and nobody will go after you. Keep your lightbox subscription active to keep your conscience happy if you need to.

+1 ripdog (not endorsing bittorrenting files illegally, but you are right that this is the option if you want to keep files).

Or buy the bluray/DVD.
