networkn: Wow what a lot of hate. Spiderman is $8 to rent, in HD. Would cost me 6-7 to rent on BR and then I'd have to drive, which would certainly cost another $2-3 and then I'd have to go out into the wet and cold, and afterwards return it another $2-3, possibly pay a late fee etc..

We Kiwi's really need to get a new more positive approach. I have really noticed how negative GZ is too recently. Shame really.

My local video store does three new releases (Blu-ray) for $10, and it is a five minute walk away

and its open 24/7 and they always have the movie in stock and never rented out to someone else?  comparing streaming services to walk in stores doesnt work, theyre different models.

i have no problem paying more for a new release, $8 for HD (1080p) 5.1 sound im completely happy with.  i wont however buy any movies/shows from them (they will be locked to their app/store, ultraviolet i would) and i wont pay $7 to rent a SD movie that is years old.  max i would do is $5 for HD.

but happy to pay ~$20 a month for a subscription service

No, not open 24/7, but it would be extremely rare for me to want to rent a movie at 3 in the morning.   You can compare physical rentals to streaming rentals, as they both rent movies.  Personally I would rather get a Blu-ray with HD audio from a video store, than pay twice as much for a lower quality streaming service.

How about $8 for a new release in 'HD' that turns out to be 720p and stereo sound? It doesn't differentiate between anything other than SD (480p) and HD (720p or 1080p). It then even says in their terms that, even if you rent it in HD, you might not be allowed to watch it in HD on your device and it will downscale to SD.

but it wouldnt be too rare that the store would be out of stock for a particular movie.   just saying different types of services, you can't expect a streaming service to do cheap tuesdays or 7 movies for $2 for a week etc like some video stores do.   the cost of streaming would be per movie, the have to pay the bandwidth, cpu power etc to deliver the movie.  a store doesnt have these types of cost, to them they may as well get the $2 instead of it gathering dust on the shelf.

so per movie, its reasonable they cannot compete with such deals, but its also reasonable to have ~$5 for HD for older movies IMO.

I suspect some price flexibility to occur once feasibility and infrastructure costs have been recouped.

Can you play a BR movie from your tablet, phone etc etc ? The point is whilst it's rare, it is available to you should you wish to. Most video Places close at 10pm, I have often watched movies after this time.

if they did do ultraviolet movies like vudu do, i would buy movies from them at reasonable prices.  i tend to buy movies from vudu if they are UV, but only rent if they arent UV.

ezyflix used to do ultraviolet.  Wonder if they've copied that part of the service across.

It's not that "Geekzone is negative". The site is not negative. The site doesn't think. You folks have to remember to distance the site from the users. It's just that there's a good representation of the the people in this country - when you think of 400,000 - 500,000 unique visitors a month with a good chunk (more than half) being from NZ...

Some people want "unlimited" broadband for $19.95 and when it comes full of problems, they complain. And when presented with the fact that "unlimited" is actually going to cost $89.95... They complain.

Everything has a cost but NZers seem to really complain about prices, without considering this is a brand new market model, which means new infrastructure, human resources (content management, support, technical, etc) and other things such as networks (peering, CDNs where used, etc).

I bet many think that if Netflix came to New Zealand it would be priced the same as in the USA... Which I doubt would happen (the pricing).

GZ is a community of people. It wouldn't exist without the people, and my observations is that overall, a lot of the commentary here for the past few months has a negative focus. I am not criticizing you, or the software (obviously), or the moderators or anyone that provides the platform. It was an observation that
typically GZ members are hyper critical of new startups unless they are super cheap, perfect in every way, have flawless customer service and did I mention cheap? I am sorry that I didn't specify the "members" clearly enough, but I believed it was a reasonable conclusion to draw that people would understand the inference.

Your other comments are correct, peoples expectations in NZ need a reality check. Sadly some of the worst cases I have seen are from people who should really know better :)

I not expecting 'super cheap', just looking for value for money relative to other options. And this new offering is not value for money - compared with, say, renting a HD movie through Vodafone's T-Box for the same cost as the SD offering from Video Ezy. And I can watch the vodafone offering direct to my big screen TV. Good on them for giving it a crack, but they won't be getting my business. And if that being negative, so be it.

i know they let you redeem UV movies, and disney movies, but when you bought a movie from them, did they ever add that to your UV library?

reven: yeah just a rebranded ezyflix.co.nz looks like, the android app link on their page takes you to the ezflix player for android

Certainly is:

Craig White is the Chief Executive Officer and co founder of Access Digital Entertainment (UK) Limited.
He co-founded Élan Media Partners Pty Ltd which owns and operates online websites such as ezydvd.com; ezyflix.com; chaos.com; play4me.com; wowhd.com.

(From: http://www.accessdigital.tv/news/ade_170513.pdf)

Also, whois shows the VideoEZY domain owned by 'Access Digital Entertainment Pty Ltd' which is featured in the footer of Ezyflix.

Edit:  Just to note, even they appear to the same site/etc as Ezyflix, but with just different branding, authentication is separate, tried my Ezyflix login on the Video Ezy site, and it was a no-go.

So it seems to be, based on https://twitter.com/ChrisKeall/status/506549452757139456  "Video Ezy launching ondemand service today (re-skin of the platform used by Ezyflix)."

And yeah, their (EzyFlix's) Adobe Air 'app' threw up some interesting prompts when I installed it to watch a movie I'd added to UV, stuff like "Publisher: UNKNOWN, Application: Player" etc, no idea if they've rectified that now or not.

Its sad that it appears to be yet another "All consumers are potential Pirates, so we must unnecessarily constrain the service to keep paranoid content rights holders happy".
