According to https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23742 using HTML 5 on Chrome the best you can get is 720p, but you can get 1080p with IE.

I reckon there own help page makes it official enough :)

Yup, same as most above, I get 720p on chrome and 1080p on IE (and looking at the html it looks like in IE it's html5 not silverlight)

Edit: Reading a bit about it - looks like Microsoft implemented MSE, WebCrypto, but I'd guess most importantly EME (http://www.w3.org/TR/encrypted-media/ - i.e DRM) for HTML5 on IE11, hence why they can do 1080p on IE11.

No problem playing 1080P/60 on youtube... It's ok guys. It's NOT an issue with my system... It's a limitation on the browser players with the exception of the IE 11 player ...

It almost pains me to say it, but the quality of streaming video from Netflix (NZ) using IE11 seems close to flawless to me (VDSL @ 40mb/s here).

Just to clarify, IE11 will only play 1080p if it's on a Win8 system.

Not worth it for me to go from Win7 to Win8 just to get the better resolution. And pay the extra to get WMC.

Ive gotta ask, is it just a case of want 1080 because you want it , not because you'll see a real difference over 720

And 1080 vs 720 is just the native res of of the vid stream. Thats not the be all & end all of quality.
A quality 720 vid will be better than a compressed to the max crappy 1080
The theres the issue of just when & where our eyes can actually see the differenece: screen size & veiwing distance (and how perfect each individuals eyesight actually is)

Panasonic 50" VT20 Plasma and AE7000 1080P projector. Yes there's a real difference.

I've had LASIK and my eyesight is significantly better than 20/20

Yes, on my 65inch Samsung you can easily see the difference between using Firefox/Chrome/Silverlight and IE/HTML5. Wow, for the first time in years a use for IE, what a strange situation.

Grin.  Well, as long as were not at this point, then I'll believe you!

BTW I'm jokin' witcha.  I too can tell the difference between 1080 and 720, but for my setup 720 is perfectly fine!

On the 32" screen I'm currently confined to up to up to 18 hours a day, 720 is quite okay also.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Why not bite the bullet and buy a chromecast? With the power saving over running a PC and noise reduction also... makes life easier for you. Although I have heard that a dual band Chromecast is coming.

My Media PC is an I3 NUC. It's quiet enough (essentially silent from a metre away) and pretty power efficient. I don't care about power efficiency though. I really don't want to have to have multiple boxes... It looks like by upgrading to windows 8.1 on the NUC I can get 1080 if I use the app, (5.1 sound only available in the app, not the ie11/win8 browser combo)... I guess that will do until I have a 4k display device.

Cheers -N
