Thanks, I'll shoot back to the volumio site.

Any idea how I find what the pi IP address is ?

Got a bit further...  found pi IP address and can see a web interface in firefox. But see nothing but symbols and menus - no hint
at what one is supposed to do.

Putty connects but wants a password/login.  So a dead end!

Went on the volumio site and there's nothing much there either, under Getting started is just info on burning the SD card.

There's a forum so I could ask there. But that text file you gave me for the Coast, can you tell me what I do with that and maybe how to hear something?

When you browse the ip address you should see the following:
Click to see full size

There's an update button in the menu that will download a bunch of play list files for all sorts of radio stations.   But if you only want the coast you can either connect via ssh/putty to the raspberry pi (user volumio pwd the same) and copy the file to the location I specified previously, or add a new stream in the web radio area.

Then under the menu is a bunch of settings for specifying where your music is hosted locally, access to spotify etc.

Yeah. I get that webpage bit it's gibberish to me and not much to help under "menu".

However thanks for the id/password and that lets me in via putty.

dir shows

clean.sh  unmute.sh  webuiupdate.sh  zerolog.sh

I don't know how to change/find folders. You said save Coast.pls   to that directory on the first page.
But earlier you said it goes to /var/lib/mpd/music/WEBRADIO

Is this the file

[playlist]
File1=http://radionetwork-iheart-ice.streamguys1.com/coihr.aac
NumberOfEntries=1
Version=2
Title=Coast

If yes, can you tell me how to get it from the pc to pi and what to do next ?

Thanks

vi /var/lib/mpd/music/WEBRADIO/Coast.pls

then type out (or paste those entries).

I must say if you're needing help on accessing and using linux in this way, then no offence, but this may not be the solution for you.  While it may get up and running, as soon as that playlist changes then you'll be stuck and having to delve into the guts of the file system to update things.

Perhaps a more turnkey solution may work better for you....as others have suggested hooking a cheap android phone up to the amp via the headphone jack and use the iheartradio app.....or getting a network aware amp with vtuner or some other internet radio solution.

Don't get me wrong, I had fun mucking around with volumio, but I was pretty comfortable with linux to begin with, and was happy to hack around in php and figure out how to rewrite a page.  And like I said, we'll be able to get you up and running, but someone - ie you will need to be first line support when it breaks inevitably down the line.

Yeah, I think you're right. I'll flag all this.  Had a go but Putty won't let you paste anything and and seems a dog of an editor
and volumio is hopeless as far as instructions go!
Thanks anyway, at least it only cost a few $$ for the SD card.  I did get Coast on my cell phone but battery considerations are
the problem there, unless I get something cheap and let it on the charger full time.  Is that feasible?  I suppose you need a SIM
card but what about a connection with 2 degrees or someone?

No sim card needed if you are on wifi. But in that case may as well get a cheap android tablet.

> may as well get a cheap android tablet.

Thanks, I'm sort of tempted, but wary.  Just found out the cell phone socket is a 4 way but also needs a smaller than standard size plug handle, or won't fit.
Is a table similar, do you know?  What is "cheap' - I see around $80 on trade me - that about right ?

What else can you do with one?  Is it like a cell phone but with no phone and you can get adroidy things (which I know naught about!)
