NonprayingMantis: Watched a couple of games on sky's fan pass: quality is surprisingly good. HDMI cable from mac book to my 65" tv.
HD. Not quite as crisp as Netflix or lightbox, but not all that far off.
No interruptions or buffering. At $55/month it's not too bad considering I'll only want it for 3-4 months per year, maybe less maybe more. Much better than getting a 12 mi th contract with sky since I never watch anything on other channels (that's why I had Netflix and lightbox)
Only real gripe is that you MUST watch the games live and in real time. If you are 20 mins late that's tough.
I used it for the cricket over the last couple of months and it was very good indeed. Picture looked nice and sharp on my 42-inch TV and the connection was rock solid for almost the entire time. I'm on Spark VDSL and I was streaming from my iPad via Airplay and the Fanpass app. I refuse to pay for a full Sky subscription when all I want to watch is the Black Caps, so this is a very acceptable compromise. Just remember the monthly sub auto-renews so you need to make sure you cancel it before it rolls over once your event has finished.

So I signed up with Sling TV at US$ 20 a month to access ESPN. You need to enter a us address - I used google maps to find a cemetery!
**everything below refers to win7 HTPC and chrome browser**
it's a bit of a fiddle finding the rugby though, as ESPN3 is not on the sling tv app.
The rugby is on espn3 which you have to watch via browser. You enter your sling tv credentials when it asks you for the cable provider. Also you need some sort of unblocker/vpn.
I'm using Unotelly and unohelper, and I'm a bit confused whether I can just click straight through, or whether I need to formally switch to their US VPN. I think it's the latter.
I used my youshop address in portland!
I use unotelly, just the dns not the vpn and it works fine. I just went on the unotelly site, it's looking a bit sad. looks like they've been forced into some changes with the netflix stuff. but it still works for me, I have the settings loaded on my apple tv and watch on the watchespn app, it's great.

So having sprung $20 a month for Sling TV so I could get ESPN, it looks like they aren't showing the Blues/Crusaders match tonight.
Someone please tell me I'm wrong.
I have had a quick look and it is listed in the Live and Upcoming in the Rugby section on WatchESPN on the Roku.

Yeah as geek guy said, you need to watch via watchESPN, they don't show it on their main channels. just go onto the watchespn site or app and authenticate your subscription and you'll be good to go.
Did a bit of a test with my parents musky and sky go, and watchESPN, Sky go about 23 seconds behind the musky and watchespn about 73 seconds behind the mysky. I think fanpass was a bit more delayed (about 90 second iirc) when I trialled it last year.
Came across the app for this http://docs.rugbypass.com/support/ when I was just browsing the app store, $USD14.99 a month, super rugby, internationals pretty much everything, plus the nrl and super league and state of origin. anyone know a good vpn into any of these places?
"RUGBYPASS.COM is available in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam."

If you use the Unotelly VPN can you update on how this goes for you. I'd be interested in trying this site as well

I've just set up an account with DNS4me (something I've been meaning to do for ages) and an account with rugbypass (which worked fine using a NZ credit card and a generic Hong Kong address).
I have set up DNS to use Hong Kong to access rugbypass. I can log in and it tells me the Highlanders game is about to start.
I am going to watch the Highlanders game to see what the quality and experience is like.
I will report back.
Having just ditched Sky I'm really hoping this works.....
