Out of curiosity how does one become a trusted member?

Someone who one of the moderators have met in real life, or someone who contributed to the community in ways that can only be rewarded by being a trusted person around. Or work for a telco and requires access to customer information via PMs so we give the Trusted badge to make sure people know it's ok.

Although I've only just signed up to an account, I'd been lurking here for over a year.  I just want you to know how helpful the tutorials and many of your discussion threads were to me when I was looking at setting up a Netflix account.  So cheers, geekzone, you've probably helped a lot more people than you'd ever realise out!

 

I would like to echo this sentiment. Although I've been signed up for a while, I'm grateful for the information posted on Geekzone by others and found it very useful when we moved away from cable TV a while ago.

Unfortunately for me, we started to get into trouble with the "Oops, proxy" message a couple of days ago and, although I had time for a quick look at the now removed thread yesterday, I missed whatever it was that might have helped us.

It really was not my day yesterday: we also bought a secondhand car, after doing the usual checks, but on the way home the Engine Warning light came on!

C'est la vie. I wish I didn't know so much about probability, otherwise I could console myself that I will have some good luck next :-)

I must say I find the decision to remove the postings a little strange. if the approach is to block information, this sets a dangerous precedent.

Lets be honest here, anyone who is region switching Netflix (or any other content provider like BBC) is violating all the terms and conditions of the service anyway.

Its no difference to the many people on Geekzone using Omnikey card readers and OSCAM for SkyTV using NZ4500 Blue cards (even though they have a legit card/subscription and are just using the card within their house so no card sharing mention), this is in complete conflict to the Sky terms and conditions so if its censorship you guys want to play, then all these discussions should be removed. Oh and lets not stop there, what about ordering DVDs/Blurays overseas with different region codes, and anydvd/makemkv etc.

Back on topic I'm surprised that Netflix doesn't simply stop access based on the low hanging fruit. All they have to do is to verify the region being reported by the devices DNS against the region being reported through the public Google DNS and OpenDNS, so for those users who aren't technical or don't have the equipment necessary for destination NAT translation for UDP/TCP port 53, they'll be taken out immediately - which is starting to happen to people I know and now everyone I know is asking me about Ubiquity routers and ADSL/VDSL bridging but their eyes glaze over when they realise the implications of keep a "netflix unlocking" solution working.

To be honest being a geek the interest for me is to circumvent the measures Netflix are putting in place - its more entertaining that any of the content that Netflix actually has on offer, and the feeling of satisfaction when you bypass the measures and giving Netflix the one fingered salute - that is worth $10 a month to me alone!

Whilst I do understand how Netflix could fully block people I can also say I've already found a loophole around your methods of which I have already solved (and Netflix have already tried). Again, I am not going to repeat what Netflix are doing or how people are/are-not getting around the current wave of blocks in public space. Many forums are following suit (including some discussions on Reddit) in order to make it harder for Netflix.

I can imagine @johnr getting involved anytime soon with the Black Helicopter putting this vastly off topic. Honestly sounds like the start of that thread. 

Totally understand the take down. I would not be at all surprised to find this forum was being snooped on.

For now this doesnt affect me - I am not a n*tflix customer.

But I really hope the n*tflix lockdown methods dont spread to the other streaming services.

I find the geo unblockers other features very useful.
