Why would the stream be:
Japan > TVNZ > USA > Akamai in NZ.
That feels like making traffic cover more distance and cause more latency than should really be required? Also more points of failure.

I am clearly missing something. Why wouldn't the USA be able to handle step 2 without TVNZ if TVNZ gave them permission?
If it HAS to go to the USA and it's probably so it can be centrally distributed to other countries other than NZ, then as far as I am concerned, making the traffic go the least distance seems both more practical and least likely to fail?

Justy, what could the delay be? Take latency, then add in a buffer , it might be a minute behind live? Or more? Or less? For me, I dont care if its a minute or 3 behind if that makes it buffering-free. (Just need to put phone upside down so I don't see alerts)

Have a look at the YT video again and it explains why. Spark is using a provider that needs to take the TVNZ stream to make it available on spark sport. TVNZ are just the means to get it from Japan to NZ given that they are a TV Brodcaster and Spark is a Digital Platform

I'd like longer than 30 seconds personally, just to allow for any transmission issues/delays. If there were any, for any reason, they could be ironed out and the stream which is effectively streamed and not livestreamed can be seamless
I will admit to having not had time to complete the video, but is the interpretation of the video, correct in stating 540P for mobile devices? Not 720P or 1080P?

Having said that, this indicates that Mobile devices are getting 540p only. If that's true, that's terrible news I think, unless someone can clarify for me? I haven't watched video in 540p by choice for many years, except food TV, which I wouldn't accept for Sport.
I viewed it as content aware, it will work out what size device you are on, and use a different stream accordingly so not only data usage is kept within the device limits, but viewability isn't blown out beyond what the eye can perceive.
The 2.0 audio on the graphic however, doesn't show if that supports 6ch encoded/passtrhough

Part of the push to jump people onto the LTE enabled routers for similar cost suddenly becomes clearer..
Would be nice, however that has its own hurdles for this street. mainly the lay of the land.

I really hope that Spark do some real live testing of their platform before the RWC. Testing in a lab is not sufficient, it will be the local infrastructure that will be the issue and most likely fail when 500K - a Mil devices attempt to stream the same game at the same time.
Cause cometh the hour and it doesn't work there will be all hell to pay for here in NZ, which is a rugby mad nation.

I'll read that later. It reminds me how negative everyone is these days, everything is a glass half empty. Sure, with Optus there are concerns, but everything really is a downer. Not just this topic, not just Politics but many others too, we all seem to seek out anything we can that is negative. So when someone says something positive it stands out as 'out there". Must just be the times we live in now.
As to Richard above, the video looks at 500,000 as a RWC target, conservative as well, Akamai seem to say that's fine

10,000 streamers vs 1,000,000 streamers... It better not crash
That is what the posted Herald article looks to address, if Spark's streaming service crashes due to half the country trying to watch the AB's, then what?
The plan would look to be to stick in it all on TVNZ, maybe. TVNZ are Spark's free to air partner.
