My wife bought a new iPhone today, so, after I set it all up for her, I remembered about the free year of Apple TV +. Set it up on my Apple TV 4K and just had time to have a quick look at the nine Apple originals. I didn’t see enough to form an opinion on the programs, but I was impressed with the video and audio quality in gorgeous Dolby Vision and sweet Dolby Atmos. I think that it will be a success, and it seems that Apple have got the streaming side of it sorted.

Given that it’s only been available for a month, I think that Apple will be offering some great content before my free subscription ends. Which will then make it tough to cancel.

Just received:

LG Electronics (LG), which introduced its 2020 smart TVs with the Apple TV app in January at CES, is now launching the Apple TV app for compatible 2019 LG smart TVs in more than 80 countries. Easily accessed from the LG Home Launcher, the Apple TV app gives LG TV owners the ability to subscribe to and watch Apple TV+, Apple’s new video subscription service, which  features popular Apple Originals such as ,“The Morning Show,” “See,” “Servant” and “Little America.”

With the Apple TV app, LG TV owners can also subscribe to Apple TV channels — direct subscriptions to premium video services available both online and offline, ad-free and on demand — and access their iTunes video library and buy or rent over 100,000 movies and TV shows. A quick click of the LG Magic Remote is all it takes to get started.

LG TVs offer users a cinematic experience with the incredible picture and sound to match the constantly growing number of programs from top global content providers. With a wide range of titles available in Dolby Vision, the Apple TV app is an ideal match for LG TVs. LG was an early adopter of Dolby technology, and its latest TVs continue to support Dolby Vision, offering users the most immersive viewing experience with truly vivid colours, greater depth and stunningly realistic sound.

LG 2019 TVs* also support Apple AirPlay 2**, which allows users to share or mirror content from their compatible iPhone, iPad or Mac directly to an LG TV. Customers can also play music on the TV and sync it with other AirPlay 2 compatible speakers anywhere in the home. Also supported is Apple HomeKit, which lets users easily and securely control their TV with the Home app on their iPhone or iPad or by voice using Siri, enabling them to power on or off, switch inputs and more.

LG TV customers can now enjoy Apple TV in addition to AirPlay 2 and HomeKit on all LG 2019 OLED TVs and compatible LG SUPER UHD TVs (series SM99, SM94, SM90, SM86, SM81) and later this month, the Apple TV app will roll out on select UHD TVs (series UM76, UM74, UM73, UM69). The Apple TV app and Apple TV+ will be available on 2020 TVs at launch and on LG’s 2018 TVs later this year via an over-the-air firmware upgrade.

“LG continues to offer the latest in home entertainment experience through technological innovations that support the delivery of high-quality viewing and user convenience,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “By bringing the Apple TV app and Apple TV+ to even more TV models, we are once again demonstrating our determination to meet consumers’ needs and add value to our products.”

* Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit integration on the 2019 LG NanoCell 8K and 4K SUPER UHD SM94 and SM86 models allows consumers to stream content from iPhone, iPad and Mac to their LG TV, including Dolby Vision titles. LG was the first global TV manufacturer to support HomeKit, which enables consumers to easily and securely control their smart home with the Home app or via Siri on their Apple devices.

**Apple AirPlay 2® requires a Wi-Fi connection. Controlling devices and features requires compatible smart devices. Subscriptions may be required to access certain content. Some features and services may be changed without notice. Depending on language, voice clarity and available content or source material, voice commands may not always deliver or respond to the requested command. AirPlay is a trademark of Apple Inc.

I wonder if this could be the nail in the coffin for Apples Hobby product device TV4k & TV HD and they will now just license out the Apple TV App ā“

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I doubt it very much.

The thread above is for a 2019 TV. Each time a new service comes out, they support recent TV's and not all TV's, and if you bought an expensive swanky TV one year too soon, you miss out. Tvs last a long time, but you would need to upgrade frequently to keep up. The ATV4 supports many TV's, good and bad, a bit old and very old.

With all the streaming options out there, ATV has them all, thats a killer "app" in itself.

So, these new TVs have an app for the Apple TV+ service but do they have all the other apps that you would normally run on an Apple TV box?

I'm thinking YouTube, Lightbox, Tidal, etc.

I was hoping the other apps would be in this Apple TV app, but unfortunately they are not.

That’s because it’s Apple TV App = software. Not Apple TV = hardware containing Apple TV App plus other apps.

Aggregating would be cool, but it adds an unnecessary support level. ATV4 hardware supports pretty much everything

LG Support for rolling out stuff for their TV's is not the best. We have the 65" C8 OLED and don't think the apple tv+ will be anytime soon. Bit stupid really as we installed Disney+ so you would think there would not be an issue rolling out the apple app.

We have everything through the Apple tv 4k anyway so no issue there.

When announcing the Apple TV app for C9 TVs recently, LG also said an Apple TV app for C8’s would be leased later this year - see the Press Release quote above.

I have just installed the Apple TV app on our C9 and it works beautifully - mainly because you can easily control it using your LG TV remote. It’s a pleasure to use and so much better than using the POS PITA remote that came with the Apple TV 4K box that we have running on our C8.

Yup agreed the remote for the apple box is utter crap but we just use the lg remote on it works perfectly.

How do you get the C8 remote working with ATV?  Mine always stays in LG mode

Looks like these new LG sets will also get Dolby Atmos

PLUS

It also looks like Apple will this year sometime launch an updated ATV box

All good news. I especially have been waiting for an updated ATV.
