A few weeks ago I watched a FTA movie (first time in ages).

Having not watched a movie on FTA for years I was also struck by the barrage of ad breaks in the final act(s) of the film.

Enough that I havn't rushed back.

The repetitive nature of the ads screened by TVNZ on-demand (etc) is annoying but at least they're less annoying than FTA ads have become.

Are you asking me? I think it was Kingsman 2. I was kind of watching it with one eye while doing other stuff on the laptop. I thought Kingsman 1 was over the top but I have been a fan of Colin Firth since Pride and Prejudice. Kingsman 2 was just silly and annoying but I kept it on and noticed how the commercial interruptions kept increasing. I'm glad I didn't actually want to watch the film, though. It would have been very frustrating.

Right. So I asked because I was curious. The part durations were as follows:

Part 1 19'17"
Part 2 09'28"
Part 3 11'53"
Part 4 12'23"
Part 5 13'30"
Part 6 11'06"
Part 7 14'10"
Part 8 24'27"
Part 9 13'03"

So when you said "What I noticed from the film was the old trick of stuffing more and more commercial breaks into the broadcast as it neared the end" that doesn't strike me as entirely fair.

Unless you meant something different?

I don't know. I wasn't timing it with a stopwatch. I was speaking from my perception. Your numbers say nothing about the  number or duration of commercials per interruption. The film is 141 minutes long. The programme guide says it ran for 170 minutes. So a film of two hours and 21 minutes carried 29 minutes of commercials. One part duration near the end lasted 20 minutes according to your figures, but the others were much shorter. Maybe the bulk of the commercials were crammed in near the end. There were far too many by any count.

The commercial break durations:

1st break: 4'35"

2nd 4'30"

3rd 4'20"

4th 4'35"

5 4'25"

6 4'30"

7 4'30"

8 4'20

All the breaks were pretty much the same duration, so they can't have crammed in the bulk of the ads near the end. So that only leaves your perception of "too many". I mean, what is "too many"? To some people, any ads are too many. To TVNZ they're probably just right if it pays for the broadcast.

Maybe your attention was waning as the movie went on?

I  swear the commercial breaks were coming thicker and faster near the end. It was really noticeable. Maybe it is some kind of cumulative effect? The more there are, the more there seem to be. Or maybe patience just wears thinner. Fortunately it is not an issue, since I almost never watch NZ FTA.

How would you suggest public television pay for these movies or are you suggesting that everyone can afford to subscribe to other services?

Im suggesting that since we have had many technologies appear since their business model was founded, that they re-evaluate the idea of sending out a stream into thin air with the only revenue being from including things to annoy people that recieve it.

Make on demand describable and good, make it have 4k and things at their original quality. Let me pay to have no ads, or the exising well targetted minimal ones.

Turn off the broadcast signal when it no longer makes sense to run it because noone is watching it. Sell the 500 and 600 MHz bands to telcos to use for something more productive.

Yes, there was a FTA movie the wife an I watched last week. Cant recall the movie name, (could have been Swordfish ?) but the first ad break was after 21 minutes, and then progressively narrower until it seemed like it was 9-10 minutes between breaks, perhaps less.

I think the aim is to still have the same number of commercial breaks, but instead of every 10 minutes, start squeezing them in towards the middle and the end.

TVNZ had floated the idea of a subscriber version of OD but seemed to get cold feet before it got anywhere.

I thought that the time to the first ad break was normally quite long to get you hooked into the programme.

And at the end put in an ad break just a little from the end so you see it before switching over/off.

‘Public television’ does not broadcast films out of the goodness of their heart. They choose content that they hope will attract viewers so they can sell advertising. That is their business model. If the business model changed, there might not be any need at all for them to make that link.

It has been a long time since I lived in Holland, and I know much has changed since then, but when I did live there we had a unique system of public broadcasting based on different special interest groups. Most were religious or political in origin, but over time they had evolved into something broader. They might be thought of as clubs. Anyone could join, and everyone paid a fee. They were allotted broadcasting time and they received additional public money based on their membership. They were also supported by advertising, but the ads were broadcast in blocks between programmes, not during them. This ensured that content was not influenced by advertising. It also made them a lot less annoying to viewers. The different broadcasting organisations naturally tried to choose content they thought would appeal to their viewers, including films, so each broadcaster’s time slot had a different flavour. Anyone could watch any broadcaster’s programmes. You didn’t have to be a member for that.

I’m not suggesting this could or should be done here, just that there are different ways of approaching it. The New Zealand model is not an all or nothing proposition.
