sm1ff: That rules me out of using on-demand. Unable to watch without 640kb 5.1 audio or atmos/dtsx. I guess no 10mb 1080p either. They need to step up the quality! I get this quality from Amazon prime video!!

I find this attitude incredibly snobby. Sorry I won't eat your food as you didn't serve it on gold trimmed crockery!

Two TV's in my house, neither does better than 1080p Stereo, it works fine. You might need to consider that your requirements are unreasonable, and if you insist on maintaining them, consider that they're also not the benchmark that the average person uses.

I suppose I could have given a throw away email but why wouldn they require to know who I am to watch a public TV programme. Also adverts would annpy me. I hope that when the new TV & Radio organisation start hopefully they will not be commercial.

When they're providing the content at no cost to you, why wouldn't they want to collect some statistics and support it with some advertising?
Using an email address makes it easy to allow you to recover your credentials (password reset, etc) and otherwise contact you as the account holder, without requiring you to select an additional unique identifier (username).

sm1ff: Sd tvs are ancient! Seriously upgrade! You will prefer the clearer and sharper picture. After seeing hd and 4k you never want sd ever again! Can't believe anyone who would still use the blurry sd tv in 2020.

For me picture quality has nothing to do with enjoying a movie, TV episode or whatever. As I said before content is everything for me.

And in the not too distant future, if one of the SD TV's breaks, I'll be watching my $150 4K TV that you paid $2000+ for.

I think you're very much an outlier, even here on a website dedicated to 'geeks'!

Totally get a preference for quality audio and video; the experience of watching some programmes and movies is completely enhanced by this (eg the sound design and mix of Sharp Objects. I also object to paid services not providing quality audio and video - here's looking at Neon and Lightbox, neither of which do 5.1.

But I certainly don't resent TVNZ for failing to provide 4k image and 5.1 sound - I mean it is free to watch. And to refuse to watch it simply because of this is quite extreme. (Ads may be a more justifable reason!)

I'd agree with a post above, that what TVNZ offers via its on-demand service is damn good, given its size and budget; it's also a decent enough UX (and better than some SVOD services). It's just easy to forget that it's there; we'll look through Netflix, Amazon Prime etc before thinking to check it out.

Because it is not really necessary. Next they will be asking you to sign in on the On Air Channels. They alrady own the rights and much of the stuff they are not putting into ondemand has not been shown onair which is another way of dumbing down the free to air channel

I personally don't mind SD too much, for 4/3 lol : ). My attempt at The Luminaries had visible artifacts now and then. Maybe some aspect of scaling to my 2k monitor via Brightcove. No problems with other media. I've yet to investigate fully. YouTube delivers 4k perfectly. Netflix delivers HD, etc, etc.

Clearly necessary is subjective.

I don't mind signing in because it lets the system remember which shows are my favourite, track my progress within shows and series and episodes, etc. If you want any of that functionality they need to identify you somehow.

I think you're expecting too much, but of course, you're within your rights to choose not to consume their product, especially given you're not paying for it!

Would you ever watch a action movie without surround sound? For me it ain't gonna happen ever! Dolby atmos and dtsX is here to stay!

Make the most of it while your hearing is still good 🙂 For me, I only hear out of one ear these days, with terrible perception of sound direction, so surround sound is just confusing...

Yes. I like logging in better. You can personalise it more. Even have different profiles for different people in the house under the same account.

It also tells you what you’ve watched so can go to an unwatched one, otherwise would have to remember which episode up to yourself.

📺 TVNZ are currently doing a Film Stream thing. Seems similar to the International Film Festival (IFF) on demand. Lots of interesting shows currently available. Shows from Argentina, France, Spain & Mexico, some new food stuff & lots of drag & fashion as well.

🤨 I was also very tempted to forget about TVNZ OD when emails became a requirement.
🙂 Now with the different profiles, keeping my favourites & watched shows separate from my partners seriously avoids confusion
🤓 With PiHole running, we pretty much only see one ad at a time for other TVNZ shows.
🙄 @TVNZ Please, when I don´t watch the final credits, please mark the episode as watched!
🙄 @TVNZ Why do I regularly have to log back in to the app? It gets used 3-7 times a week.

I cant stand visible artifacts. Bad enough that they still do the framerate thing but over the air has deinterlacing artifacts, and their on demand bitrates are too low. I would in the past say youtube looked better, but that is now also ruined with overcompression. As my TV only does h264 I have no idea if it is to penalize us with older devices that lack VP9 like they wont give us better than 1080p, or if it is true that youtube are screwing everyones uploads over with insanely low bitrates.

Macroblocks popping up when things change scenes, judder when panning because of low FPS or conversions, and banding in gradients just take away from the enjoyment. They don't need to be there, they are deliberate choices to lower the costs of delivering the content to you.
