I wanna know your experiences with Netflix and recommendations for Apple TV etc.
Seesm like Netflix isnt as great as it sounds...?
So they dont get brand new movies as soon as it comes on DVD?
Thats average.
I thought they got everything. But again for $13 usd (8+5) its not expensive at all to try.
I am with telecom. Will i have any problems setting up? Will i be able to set up easily? So just follow the set up on unblockUS?
And another question i asked was will this unblock US service solve my 3 strike law? YES or NO? not Kinda...

According to Google, Telecom New Zealand uses a transparent proxy. So, being a GEEK and calming the F*CK down, yes, you will have problems.

Now, the rest of the information was so that you, yourself, as well as anyone else reading the discussion would be able to figure out this sort of thing on your own, instead of having to beg for help from us "GEEKS".

Disrespective: Netflix is great for those random indie/PBS documentaries which are more arts and science based.

Vudu is great for the latest DVD/Bluray Movie releases

Hulu+ is great for the latest TV shows.

There is a little crossover on TV shows between Hulu+ and Netflix but those are the basics.

I can stream Netflix just fine with about 3MB/s connection in central Wellington. The others work fine too. But if I use BBC iPlayer I have troubles irrespective of whether I use a VPN or a DNS based service.

Agree with most of that. My one month trials are coming to an end and I haven't decided which one to keep or ditch. I will keep Vudu only because it's not subscription based and I have a $5.99 credit to use. That is good enough for one latest release movie in HDX format (1080P DD+). I did see tonight there was a 99c special on "No Strings Attached" but that is probably what it's worth anyway.

Netflix has a larger selection but not so current stuff. Hulu+ has more TV shows but there are ads which are not really that annoying.

For $7.99 maybe the answer is to keep both going for a couple of months and then decide which one you watch more frequently.

Keeping on the Apple theme I just received an email from Vudu saying they now have an iPad client but I don't know about ATV.

You might not, but exchanging valuable information is the only way to find if things work or not.

It's great, but if you are going to do have to worry about proxy, VPN, etc, why don't go and get a US iTunes account?

Yes, they do.

The "3strike law" is mainly targeting P2P sharing, which those other services are not. But at some point they might want to work on that too.

Actually from what people have told me, even for physical distribution which is not relevant here of course, they are 30 days behind the disc release for rentals. And for streaming it's even longer.

Vudu OTOH appears to have first run movies that are available as soon as the discs are released.

Behodar: I tried unblock-us last month on TCL and it was intermittent. I thought it was just that unblock-us was no good but it seems from the other responses here that it's TCL's problem. If I have a chance, I'll log a ticket and see whether I can get anywhere.

No luck, TCL refuses to help on the basis that Netflix isn't supported. As jpollock said earlier, this isn't neutrality!

Signed up for unblock-us and had no issues at all have Vudu + Netflix setup (orcon is my ISP)

Got one of those new samsung led8000 tv and setup with a US account so i could download the apps :D

netflix works on it, Vudu was clever and realised my model was the UA version, not the UN (american model number) and woulnd't work :(

I then setup Vudu + Netflix on my PS3 and it all works really well.
Streamed quite few 3D movie trailers from Vudu and was very impressed - haven't tried streaming during peak hours , on their speed test i was getting 15000-16000kbps during the day

Though I haven't watched a movie on Vudu yet, I have a $5.99 credit so I am waiting for the right title to appear. Or maybe watch a bunch of their 99c specials.

I like the fact that Vudu offers DD+ audio on both their 720P (HD) and 1080P (HDX) streams. Since my TV is only 720P capable I can quite satisfied with the HD streams.

Of the other two streaming services, Netflix and Hulu+ I think I am going to ditch Hulu+. Free Hulu provides enough current television programming for our family's needs and Netflix has tons of content that suit the kids.

Bringing this one back from the death.

After the new apple tv update I've decided to give netflicks and a few other services ago.

But I'm on Telstra with the transparent proxy issue...

I'm doing a trial now and it seems ok'ish. Getting a few hold ups.

Was there ever a solid answer to this issue using unblock-us with TCL.

Was also looking at a Roku but I'm an apple fan boy so thought I'd give this ago first.

The situation is, with TCL cable the transparent proxy will break web access to Netflix and and any other US streaming site.

But it will not affect a media player like a PS3, Roku, tablet or phone. I suspect the same applies to AppleTV but I don't have one so don't know. This is because the transparent proxy redirects port 80 traffic but the devices above don't use port 80.

The only other issue you will have is trying to sign up on the web. You will need to use a VPN. Tunnel Bear is probably the best here as it's free.

I got it by changing the country and it just popped up. You still need a vpn or something like unblock-us. Or a DNS that supports netflix.

I used unblock-us and it seems to work for now. That just gives you directions to update the DNS settings on the apple TV. didnt know a new one was in the works.

Any apple TV will work here for netflix. It just needs to be set to an account on the US store. And while you're there you get access to relatively new movies (a little bit behind US dvd releases).

Unblock us and similar services are great in you can use them, especially if your service allows change of netflix region - as some regions, like UK and Canada can have less content, but more up to date content.

The other main reason I thin kan apple tv is a good buy, is the simple fact you can get it here. And with a simple change it will access us content. WD TVs the NZ model (I'm led to believe) wont support netflix, a roku 3, fairly hard to get here. Some of the other pretty good experiences are samsung tvs and blu ray players.

As for content, netlifx is great for catching up on tv series, and if you can be patient, for movies......or just random browsing content.

Hi guys,

I've been using Netflix, Hulu Plus etc successfully for a few months, no worries with using my NZ credit card either. I think I may even be using My Paypal for one of them. Way better than subscribing to Sky TV anyways. I'm sure they'd be the only company in NZ that would want to shut it down.

But anyways…

I really want to subscribe to Netflix DVD, which is a little different to just normal Netflix.

I tried to access on my computer but it won't work. Anybody have any luck with this? I really just want to watch season 6 of Californication.
