Common sense is not as common as you think.

Yeah same here, NFL looks perfect to me, that's what I watch.  Just interested to know why the soccer sounds so much worse.

I would imagine as the NFL is for the USA(except where blackout rules apply) and the rest of the world v NZ for the PLP, the amount of money being spent on quality varys a lot.

And maybe they think they will get enough viewers from research and people who said they were interested to not have to give the best quality available. Or banking on those who will sign up anyway regardless

Has anyone managed to sign up through Telecom?

I ask cos I had a frustrating wait for someone at Telcom to ask various supervisors in their team about signing up through them only to be refered to the 0800 help line monitored by the premier League pass team. They in turn referred me back to Telecom!

The thing about the preview stream is that it's extremely low quality, much lower than you'd get selecting 3mbit on nfl game pass. I don't know if i'm getting the full bitrate or the automatic bitrate selector is being conservative. it often won't select the highest bitrate automatically on game pass but if I select it manually it streams fine.

I just had a look at the NFL stream and overrode the default best setting and hard coded the 3000kbps stream. On my 55" screen this looked terrible. I then tried the 4500kbps stream and this was better but still nothing I would describe as HD or even close to HD.

There is no chance that PLP will be providing a 4500kbps stream and even if they were it would not be good enough. The only acceptable stream for me would be a minimum of 9000kbps.

I can only hope that PLP fail to convince enough people to sign up and they go out of business. If somehow their business succeeds then the beautiful game will be anything but.... At least in New Zealand for the next three years.

I doubt they will be going out of business that quickly - they have billionaire backers so will be giving it a shot for at least 3 years.

I'm curious,  how did you ever watch football before about 5 years ago when Sky launched HD?  It must have been sheer agony for you watching everything in the unacceptable SD quality.

@Sphyre,

The bitrate is equally as important as the resolution in this case. A high resolution (720p,1080i) / low bit rate will still meet the requirements for HD screen size but will look terrible due to the lack of quality in the stream / video.

What is being mentioned is that the bitrate is too low for 720p, let alone native resolutions of modern plasma's / LCDs.

I am use to watching the Premier League in HD.

I cannot accept watching it in a quality which reminds me of the 1980's and bunny ears....

Can you seriously accept this major backward step in broadcasting quality???? I for one cannot.

yeah i'm aware of that thanks. at 4500kbit the bitrate is roughly equivalent to 720p HDTV rips that are commonly available on certain parts of the internet. not 100% as good as broadcast hd, sure, but hardly the "1980s tv and bunny ears" he's making it out to be.

You should have a look at the NFL streaming site and check the quality of the 4500kbps stream. It is nowhere near the quality of the HDTV rips you are referring to.

are we looking at the same site? i compared it with what was on hand (the latest ep of top gear) and they were similar quality.

some back of the envelope calculations:

size of top gear file: 1,477,429,544 bytes
running time: 60 minutes

1,477,429,544 / (60 minutes * 60 seconds) = 410397 bytes / second = 3283176 bits / second

= 3206 kilobits per second average bitrate (including audio), which again is comparable to nfl game pass. both will be using the h264 codec for video so no difference there.

are you sure the 4500 kbit stream has loaded properly?
