Hi,

I've signed up as well and seems good for now. A few questions/comments:

After changing the DNS (but probably before signing in), I got an error on my phone when accessing any web page saying something like "You have reached this page because you have not been authorised to use dns4me..." Surely most HTTP requests should go straight through? My concern here is that all internet traffic would stop working if my IP would change. I change the DNS on my router.

Tech question - can I just change the hosts file (or something equivalent) on the router (using fritzbox)?

And one country I'd like added is Canada...

Thanks

Hi mad01

You only see this message when our DNS server gets a request from an unknown ip, the DNS server responds with an IP of a server we have setup that redirects to that page. Once your authorised on the system all requests will run as normal, the reason we set it up this way is so people other than dns4me users don't use the DNS servers for recursion (this would utilise resources and put extra load on the servers effecting the performance for our users)

We have already had some requests for canada, so a server and some services are already at the top of our list, we have a Swiss server we are about to make live too, which will open up zattoo. This should be up next week.

Thanks

Yeah, I think I got that error too, and share that concern. Unotelly (a provider I use at present) is forgiving with respect to non-geoblocked addresses if you're not officially signed up & with the correct IP. They'll send your normal DNS requests, just blocking the geo-blocked stuff. In other words your interwebs keep working. Getflix, when I asked them, said that if you're not signed up, paid and IP updated, they'll serve a limited number of non-geoblocked requests - enough to keep you going until you a) pay up or update your IP address or b) realise and change your DNS server settings to your own ISPs or the generic 8.8.8.8 ;)

I'd like to know dns4me's policy in this regard. I don't expect geo-unblocking to work if I'm unpaid or IP is mismatched, but I don't want internet to not work (especially as I'm on VOIP).

This is where using dns4me's hostfile comes in handy. Setting it for your device (PC etc, so long as you can change/edit the host file) or at router level allows you can use any DNS server address (including dns4me's), or anyone else, meaning that your general internet access should keep on working no matter your dns4me subscription & IP status. I don't know if Fritzbox lets you change the hosts file - if not, that's a reason to use a router (and ISP your current provider requires locked in hardware) which is more than a dumb brick.

Canada - what's that aboot?

As stated all dns traffic is blocked to stop the servers from getting performance hits due to unpaid users, which I agree with. I'd you're worried about that then setup a separate Wifi I'm a separate subnet that uses the dns4me servers, that way the router (and voip) continue to work since they use the ISP servers.

Yeah, I posted that just as Jason put his post up. Actually, to clarify and on reflection I don't see it as a problem. It's no major thing to either pay up, update your IP or use different DNS servers. I guess I was speaking from the perspective of setting my dad up recently with Getflix, and worrying what happens if he forgets to update his IP, and suddenly no telephone or internet...but I *think* he's getting to grips with IP updating, and I will soon set him up with a DDNS provider.

Hi sultanoswing

You could use our new zone update URL just goto the zone editor and click the arrow beside the use the current IP button this will show you a drop down with the ability to generate a URL to update that zone (even if you haven't logged in) just give him the link.

Thanks

It's not a major thing for people on this site.  But it could become a major thing if the internet would stop working while I'm away and my wife tries to work from home.

I guess I am taking the lazy option of setting the DNS on the router when pretty much all streaming is done from PS3/Wii so I could just update those boxes. I will have a look about setting just the netflix hosts on the router (if I can figure out how).

Canada - that's where I'm from - and for the NHL when it's back!

Hi livealittle

I have just sent some instructions on howto setup the Fritz box to get it working on dns4me.
I have a love hate relationship with Roku. its a great streamer, but i hate how they lock the DNS settings.

Thanks

What are the chances of publishing a shortcut/link that could have my authentication details/cookie saved so my parents/wife and young offspring could be taught to just 'click that buton' to update the IP details... Perhaps with a reasonable limit of IP's per month to prevent overuse/sharing an account?

I.e. A message like "your access to DNS4ME has been restricted due to your IP being unknown, check your device for an icon looking like ๐Ÿ’ข and click this to update our details automatically"

It can take a minute or two for the DNS change to propagate so make sure they know after updating wait a minute or two :)

DarkShadow: OK. When you add servers in the future, first interest for me would be Hong Kong and second interest would be for China.

Hi YJ

We now have a Chinese server and have added tuduo and youku to the services list :)

Thanks
Jason K

with  response times and customer involvement like this you're surely going to shine out from the crowd :)

thanks for the help in resolving the Lightboox issues, working great now and only bound by my own measly connection speeds (and their seeming lack of a decent buffer time)

Thank you very much. Services win the game!laughing
