It seems to have improved a lot since launch day. Fingers crossed it stays good.

I use Spark ADSL and Unotelly.

HBO picture quality has been poor since I signed up a few days ago, so tonight I rebooted the modem and updated the IP with Unotelly, and Bingo, HBO is now in HD on my Apple TV.

Not sure why it fixed it, unless it was something to do with resetting the connection to Unotelly?

Interesting that you can get HD on your Spark ADSL connection.

I still can't get full stable HD HBO even after rebooting my router and Apple TV on our VDSL2 Spark connection with Unotelly. I have even tried out Unblock-US to see if the DNS was causing issues but there is no difference.

The ATV will display full HD for a few seconds when starting playback but quickly down scales to SD and will pause and buffer a few times per hour. 5.1 sound is streaming fine with no issues. However, video performance is SD (or less) in my case.

Do you need to set anything on Dynamo? I can't seem to sign up on AppleTV and just stuck on loading the sign up page (i guess).

rokki: Does anyone know of an easy way to get credit on to a U.S. iTunes account for things like HBO Now ?

We have our US iTunes account paired with our Air New Zealand OneSmart card.

What is interesting is that if we forget to top up our US wallet, we can still rent a movie. Apple simply won't let us rent another one until our payment details have been updated once we remember to put more money on the card.

My Air NZ Amex card also seems to work fine with a US iTunes account.

My AppleTV (with US iTunes account) is stuck on "Accessing HBO Now" and I've tried with Unotelly, and now trying with DNS4Me.

Nope, it just worked. Very seamless sign-up process actually, with no credentials needed to get going, due to it being tied to your Apple ID.

I tried many times, I'm stuck on "Accessing HBO Now" when trying to get the trial setup. I've tried with UnoTelly and now DNS4Me and both the same.

Wonder if something's changed. We signed up on Friday with no issues at all. And it streamed fine earlier this morning. Perhaps you should touch base with Unotelly support.

I've subscribed to DNS4me and I've just contacted them.

So how are people finding HBO Now performance so far?

For us it is very hit and miss, and is pretty much unusable during peak times. Our ADSL2 connection usually sits around 10Mbps, but I have seen it as high as 14Mbps. But recently in the evenings its been dipping down to between 3Mbps and 6Mbps. When this happens, HBO Now takes an age to start up. It will then stop to rebuffer every 2 minutes or so, and this rebuffering process takes around  1-2 minutes.

In contrast, when this happens we are getting excellent performance from Lightbox and Netflix (currently set to AU via Unotelly). We find that Hulu also struggles, but is still nowhere near as bad as HBO Now.

Spark are currently investigating whether its a congestion issue in my area, but with the cards currently dealt to us, HBO Now is frustratingly unreliable. It's such a shame, as it contains so much good content (If you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend Life's Too Short).

Its also frustrating that our other SVOD providers perform a lot better during these peak periods, although I concede the data is not travelling anywhere near as far. I should probably switch Netflix to US to see how that compares during peak times.

I'm on 100 Mb/s UFB and haven't had any buffering issues, but it won't stay in HD. It switched to SD a few times during Game of Thrones.

I watched a movie the night before without any issues, so it seems that it is a "peak time" issue.

Interestingly enough, performance was comparatively good for us watching Game of Thrones (watched around 7PM on Monday). It only stopped to buffer once, and was probably in HD for around 75% of the time.

I had this on day one using a VPN. ended up signing up on my iPad and then just used the restore purchases link on the ATV.
