littleheaven: Sounds like the Hauppage running alongside other processes is just too much for the CPU, resulting in the overheating. It will probably do the trick as a no-frills streamer on a bedroom TV or something, but you'll definitely get more joy from a better-specced NUC.
The Alienware Alpha might be worth a look. Designed for gaming, so has good graphics and processor support for a sub $800 price tag and reasonably small form factor.

Rikkitic:Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not in a hurry because I now have a notebook and everything works fine on that. I don't want to tie it up this way forever but it is a good temporary solution. In the meantime I am going to do a professional job on the heatsinking and see how much difference that makes. Who knows? This thing may end up working after all.
