lchiu7: Out of interest how is all this streaming affecting your caps? I have a 90GB plan with TCL at the moment but with all this streaming and long Skype video calls with my daughter in the US that's getting hammered.

Might have to look at moving to a provider who has better plans.

We only watch one or two episodes a week, so on a 120GB this is the least of our concerns.

Not you directly, but in general it always surprises me though people who can go over 100GB by downloading content... Where can people find time to watch all this digital bits they are hoarding? Or is our family the only one that spends less than six hours a week in front of TV?

When you have 2-3 users in the house doing Youtube a fair bit and then with Netflix and Hulu streaming, it doesn't take too long. Then I have a SIP phone connected to US provider and make a fair few calls to the US on it as well as receiving calls. I don't know precisely what data phone calls use but it all adds up. Then there's Skype video.

As for TV about the only TV we watch is the news in the morning and at 6pm. It might be on as background some of the time and then on Food TV. We watch hardly any episodic TV and if we do (but this doesn't of course impact our data cap) it's recorded and watched later.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Yup, I agree - with 2 teenage kids who watch 90% of their 'viewing time' with either netflix, youtube or Hulu, it doesn't take long to chew through a data cap.

And with downloads are always getting 'bigger', such as BD rips, which can easily hit 30GB plus for a single movie.  its not so much all the content as the increasing quality of the content.

When we move to 4K sources, that will jump up to nearly 200GB for a single movie!

Don't need to do BD rip downloads (which are strictly illegal) to go over the cap!

I am trying to watch more content on TV3 on Demand since that is free on TCL but I find the PAL speedup quite annoying at times, especially after having watched the same show at the right framerate.

Seems complicated - if you have a onesmart card from air nz. Use that for your offshore purchases.

You are missing the point. While the OneSmart card from AirNZ works in the US (I used it extensively on my last trip) it's not a credit card and does not have a US billing address and I am not sure you could even change the address on it to be a US one.

The services folks are talking about here like Hulu+ or iTunes (US) require a US credit card with a US billing address. Hence the workarounds being discussed. They won't accept a NZ credit card at all.

Another such place is Best Buy which I find annoying when I want to buy a gift certificate for a friend in the US. I can't use my NZ credit cards so I have to use my US one. And while BB accepts Paypal when you go to pay, it rejects the payment because the CC behind the account is not a US one.

Might give it a try then. My OneSmart account is now empty but my daughter who is over in the US now has a healthy balance so I will ask her to try to buy a movie on my Vudu account or perhaps some accessory from Newegg.com for her PC. Both reject non US billed CC's.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

That's what I was trying to say, but not very well!

My kids now watch far more Hulu and netflix than live TV, and yes, even with these (along with all the updates that come down the line, Trailers on AppleTV, PS3 game demos, iTunes purchases in HD from the US etc etc) it is VERY easy to exceed a data cap without doing anything illegal.

BTW, and back on topic - I am VERY interested to know if the Airpoints cards work - I might try mine on my US iTunes account

This works well.

It seems the AirNZ card is a "US card", and Hulu Plus don't check your physical address you enter, only the address of the card.

Just enter your NZ address.  All works sweet.

Now that is cool and apologies for doubting the person who suggested this.

Might top up my OneSmart card and change my payment in Hulu and Vudu to the OneSmart card while the dollar is still strong.

What's the bet AirNZ now see a huge increase in people using their cards to spend US funds ;-)

This could be quite useful.  Can I suggest we collate our findings in this thread across:

iTunes
Hulu Plus
PSN (Playstation network)
Spotify

I only use iTunes, so can check that out.

Just like Apple did when iTunes came to Australia.   You could sign up  from NZ with an NZ CC and put in an AU state for an address.  They plugged that in about a week..
