Also from a press release sent at 1.20am:

The service peaked at 132,000 concurrent streams and by the end of the match had dropped to 126,000.

Does anyone have any tips or thoughts on problems watching on Chrome browser on an acer laptop? I have fibre downloading between 20mbps (during the AB's game last night) and 90mbps today. I can watch on my ipad fine and stream to apple tv - (quite a few low res moments during the second half tho).

Spark sport have said to clear my browser cache and disable extensions and not run any extra apps, but its constantly stop/starting when watching on my browser. Not sure where to look for answers with this issue.

Based on that speed range on fibre, I'd say you have WiFi contention.

One thing is bugging me... If it was a problem with the "international streaming partners" why did it not affect everyone?

Affected me in Wellington on 2degrees fibre - Samsung TV.
Affected my parents in Auckland on Vodafone fibre - Sony TV.

Stream was solid but quality was utter rubbish - at some points, I couldnt make out the players.

This could be the laptop having a low specs GPU or heavier CPU usage.

Is your Chrome browser updated to the latest version?
Make sure the settings for "Use hardware acceleration" is enabled as per image below.
Close any other apps you might have in the background - including crypto miners, game downloaders, P2P applications.
Make sure you are connected via ethernet cable or at least a very stable wireless connection.

But out of 132,000 users (126,000 at the end of the game) how many were affected? Why not all 132,000 users?

I am waiting to see what their work will reveal.

My feel is that a lot were affected more so than they are making it out. A lot for Spark to make the call to switch it on Duke. This message of a small percentage sounds like bollocks.

And that's the problem. Unless we get a report that says exactly what/how then we will just be fed bollocks. And people will feel ill towards the company.

I watched all three games and the first two streamed perfectly. The second half of the AB match was a mess with constant resolution drops.

Just my take on all the anecdotal stuff that is going around on what worked and what didn't it sounds/looks like the TV Apps suffered most, and the android app & website viewers less so. Anyone any thoughts on why the apps should be less effective, given the TVs specs (presumably) cope fine with other forms of streaming (eg TVNZondemand/Netflix)?

I watch OK on Firefox, on windows 10 (homebuilt HTPC i7-4790s), ethernet to hg659b, connecting VDSL (65/28) to Spark.  When watching the Japan game the night before on Chrome, there was a glitch every few seconds, most noticeable in the sound pausing for a fraction of a second, but enough to make me explore options.  When i looked at my HTPC ethernet usage during the ABs game the 'streaming feed' does come in bursts, and these bursts would seem to be in time with the sound glitch.  If the bursts are filling a buffer, then why the synchronized glitch?

This was taken during half time, but was similar during the actual play.

A little off the current topic (the streaming issues from last night) but does anyone know if the Spark Sport app (iOS) will allow me to watch the games from Bali?

I’m headed there next week for a couple of weeks and was just wondering if it’s geo-locked to NZ only.

Its geo-locked to NZ so no you wont be able to. If you VPN back into NZ then that will work.

This is the same as happened with me. I did everything recommended by Spark etc to get the best result.

I bought a new Apple TV, I had Spark Fibre installed, and I used wired internet (ethernet). I also am paying for the most expensive fastest internet Spark has available.

All this is brand new, so you'd think these would surely do the job.

Shortly after halftime, the picture was unwatchable, so thanks to the advice on this Geekzone thread, I switched to Duke to watch the rest of the game.

Now, for Spark and others to say that only a very few people experienced poor video issues has to be nonsense.

Samsung Q7 app
VF 100 fibre
Fully wired setup

I had no issues with the Japan v SA game, the opening ceremony, the Japan v Russia game, or the Aus v Fiji game (once I stopped source switching on the TV - Samsung you need to sort that out).

But during the NZ v SA game it all went to hell in a handbasket. What changed? Apart from the number of viewers?

Many people reported resolution drops but otherwise OK. So they probably stayed. The switch to Duke was also not well advertised so many wouldn’t have known about the simulcast. There was a pop up message on the stream but only late in the second half when the stream was fine. Also to that point, the stream was perfect for the last 20 minutes, so I suspect if it was a capacity issue then it wasn’t a major one and the drop of a few thousand customers was enough to resolve it though.

I am not sure we will find out the real cause though.... there is enough spin in their media releases already that I don’t have confidence of that.
