bmoff:
geek4me: Has anyone been able to get Pandora to work in NZ on Smart TVs or Smart Blu-Ray players? I have an LG 42" LM6200 TV and Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Blu Ray player both with Internet access. I'd like to play Pandora via my stereo. Have asked Pandora about when it will be available but had no reply.

I have Pandora on my Samsung C series, I had to change the location to USA in the system menu.

This is really annoying me about Pandora, why aren't they supporting these devices in NZ? Sonos, Smart TV's, most internet radios are all Pandora capable but are not being supported here it seems. This was one of the questions I would have liked asked of the Pandora guy when he was here.

Hear your pain, however was pandora fully a legal service / officially in NZ when you purchased your smart tv/blueray players? Have there been any firmware updates to your devices recently and are the manufacturers of your devices now supporting pandora on their newer devices?

I asked the question re support for Smart TVs and PLayers on Geekzone for the Pandora guy to answer but he did not comment on that.

As luck would have it since posting my request above I received a reply from Pandora after resending my question.

Their reply:

"Unfortunately, we aren't yet available on devices for folks in New Zealand. Because of the interactive nature of Pandora, we do not create playlist files like many other online radio/shoutcast streams. As a result, Pandora doesn't work without some additional development on the part of the device manufacturer."

I have questioned this response as my devices already support Pandora in the US so I did not think they could blame the device manufacturers.

It looks like Pandora is only "half" released in NZ.

Perhaps I am missing something on why the same model of TV and Blu Ray player that works with Pandora in the US does not here.

My devices firmware is fully up to date. I appreciate it has to be for Pandora to work! The devices are supported as mentioned above.

Another reply just received from Pandora. I asked how could the manufacturers be to blame -

"Thanks for writing back and I understand your frustration. There is actually a lot of work that goes into converting apps for use in different countries (as legally certain features vary from country to country) so it will take us some time before will be able to offer these apps to folks in New Zealand.

Sorry again for any confusion. "

This reply at least makes sense to me. I just hope that "some time" does not mean too many months of delay.

Meanwhile we will all have to wait ...

After five years Pandora is pulling out of Australia and New Zealand, to focus on the US market only, according to reports including Billboard.

Not really surprised. I do use it often, a few times per week, but always wondered how on earth they survive.

I use to have a subscription up until about 3 months ago then stopped it because I thought the US$4.99 per month was not really worth it. The subscription did not really offer anything above the free service apart from ad-free. The subscription was always advertised as allowing more skips, but I never found any difference between the free and paid version.

Saying that, I hope it will continue to work here in NZ. I like the way it finds music.

Bit sad, but must be hard to compete with Spotfy.

Yeah, I was wondering the same. Given NZ was about the first (if not the first) country outside of the US to get Pandora I can't recall if I ever used it when it was a US-only service.

We've only ever used the free version on our various Squeezeboxes (electing to have Spotify family as our paid-for source), but we'll still miss that - especially my wife who uses it daily.

Will it be feasible to switch a (free) Pandora account to the US, or set up a US account, and continue to access it in NZ? (And, if so, would a DNS service be required? We're already using Getflix.)

Probably the only 3rd party app my car's infotainment system has that I ever used.

I had a sub for a while, back when I set it up with a US account, had used it on the echo's for a bit but it didnt survive the "oh crap I spend how much on streaming services" cull of a few months ago.

Seemed better than spotify at making decent random selections and discovery, but the lack of it being able to play certain things was a killer for me. Spotify and choosing music wins out. At least spotify is much better for recommendations than tidal is, with its recommended stuff just being crap I have never heard of and dont like.

Has anyone used any other similar services and liked them? I'm talking about Spotify's Radio or iHeartRadio's MyRadio, etc.

I use Pandora a lot (as in every day >2 hours), so I'd really like to find the best alternative before Pandora recedes back to the US.

Crap, my Dad loves Pandora.

Trying to get him to use something else is going to cause the extreme "Why does Technology changes all the time" rage.

I think mine is a US account as it seems to play NZ ads when I listen in my car (On Vodafone data network), but US ads when I am at home (via DNS4Me). I seem to recall I had registered an account before Pandora officially launched in NZ, cant remember.

I just hope it continues to work once they drop the service in NZ. Problem though is that the Pandora app will probably no longer be available in the app store, and I may only be able to access it via a web browser. Hopefully my iphone will still be able to work when at home.

Noooooooo.

I love pandora and my car has the app for it :(  They have the best setup for new music based of what you rated before.

However can see why they are pulling out, NZ etc never got the offline playback or any of the other stuff the US did.

It was also very friendly on the mobile data compared to the other music services.
