Netflix doesn't have any production costs

At the cheap as chips price its always been, they still lost money. I think now its possibly just in the black in last year or so? Up the price $5 or $10 per month and the business is sorted for the future. Same would apply to the other competitors I would imagine. As @networkn stated earlier a 30 dollar price seems possible, and I see that as fair. USD or NZD, around there anyway. $30 to watch unlimited movies and TV, with some brand new hot exclusives? Sounds a cracker deal to me

Its in the black only by way of how it accounts for and amortises content costs.  The Net Profit is not the one to watch - watch the cashflow cos content costs upfront and you hope it pays for itself over its lifetime.....

Netflix will start slow - probably just promo's on a pre/post roll basis.

Unlikely https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/netflix-advertising-live-broadcasting-mobile-streaming-30-second-trailers-reed-hastings-a8245701.html

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/22/how-to-opt-out-of-new-ad-tests-on-netflix.html

You will note that the testing of advertising by Netflix occurred after that independent article - so its happy to do pre-rolls but not chop up programmes?

And NatGeo inserting self promos in its content = not advertising?  ESPN must have the lowest level of not advertising amongst all of its broadcast peers.  Advertising is advertising.  Advertising one self is still advertising.

I’ve opted out of their testing.

The only ones in their testing program will be those that don’t mind forced viewing, or people that don’t know how to opt out, so their tests will give them false results in future.

In same article there is a link to back lash against previews being shown between programs.

Netflix made some big plays last year for talent(ie Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes) which have huge potential..

I share my netflix 4K subscription with three other people to keep the cost down.

Netflix are cracking down on this, you may end up with your account suspended or banned. I am unsure when they started implementing it, but they hired a company to develop detection of this recently. I would recommend you stop immediately.

I have already checked with netflix customer services perfectly OK to do this.

It's against their Terms of Service (you should have a read). Regardless of what Customer Service says. It won't just stop working, your account could be suspended and you won't be able to use NF any more in the worst case.

At $18.50 for unlimited 4K viewing for an entire month, the cost is not high begin with.

And a bigger bargain when shared with other uses on the same account with the blessing of the CEO of Netflix Reed Hastings.

Highly likely this would be the majority of all customers.

Nope, not even close. $4 a week. I doubt many people would seek to drop that by $2-66 so they can afford it.

Not anymore it seems

https://www.valuewalk.com/2019/01/netflix-account-sharing-may-stop-with-this-new-app/

I guess the big take out with this article is the strategic use of the words "could" and "may". It's more of a marketing piece for Synamedia* (not Synmedia as the reporter incorrectly writes three times - although to be fair she gets it right three times as well) who are making a pitch using one of the [currently] biggest names in the industry. The whole article is, in a nutshell: "{insert svod supplier name here} 'could' start using our software and 'may' start taking action against account sharing."

Personally, I'd base any notion of account sharing coming to an end on an official statement from Netflix.

* More information on the advertised software can be found under "Products\Video Security\VideoGuard Anti-Piracy Services" - so, it would seem if you share your account credentials, you're being pitched as a pirate. Arrr.

Disclaimer: I don't account share.

All I would say to this is Mr Hastings made that comment three years ago. Personal views, much like societal norms, are not fixed in time. He's not only got a company to make profitable so it can continue investing billions in original content and stave off competition, but he also has a board of directors to keep happy. For now though, enjoy your cheaper than cheap subscription :-)

I will in addition to the many millions of netflix customers that account share throughout the world.
