I know how it works but a mobile phone lacks tactile feedback on buttons and no defined ridges etc. so its harder to stop / start / pause etc. without looking at the screen... Remotes are more ergonomic in general.

okay, make sense.

I prefer having the virtual keyboard to seach quickly for things over a tactile stop, play etc button. We are all unique.

We are indeed. I use voice for searching and the remote for navigating.

To be honest, I am not sure how I feel about Sky charging me for RWC. I pay for sport. Rugby is a core sport in NZ IMO and RWC is a flagship event. Had Sky of won the rights, I would not have been charged.

I see it a little of Sky doing Spark a favour so I don't know if rather than selling them the rights they come to some reciprocal agreement.

Ultimately, if they offered it for $20 for the tournament (every game) or something, I would begrudgingly pay it, but it would come with a letter to the CEO about it :)

How will sky be charging you for RWC?  Sky lost the bid in the tender for the rights just like it did F1 and EPL

It's business - just like everyone changing internet provider... Everyone needs to give Spark a chance to show that they have partnered with the right people to deliver. (I'm not employed by spark - Just sick of the bashing they get)

If we use your quote "rugby is core sport in NZ" then shouldnt TVNZ have full FTA rights then as well?

As I and some others here have said, Spark has partnered with TVNZ in showing the games on TV so if anything goes wrong like it did with Optus in Aus last year with the FIFA World Cup then the games would be shown on TVNZ.

Yes, that is what anyone would expect. Quite obvious.

guess i'm on the other end of the bench... i'd be surprised if Spark fails to deliver.

this isn't an initial venture for them, albeit on a different scale altogether...  they have had lightbox (and the optus issue) to learn from.

they've had ample time to prepare for this and seem to have the right figures in mind (number of streams expected, etc.) and as mentioned above, there is the tvnz fallback.

this isn't anywhere near the complexity of deploying 5G, which they're also working on.

no, i'm neither spark fan boy nor employee.

Because they did such an amazing job of the Commonwealth games, right?! In NZ it would have had a fraction of the viewers the RWC games will get.

The AB games should be fine, it's everything else...

Wasn't the Commonwealth issue due to ads, missing games or parts of games, rather than uninterupted video performance?

While the video stated that they cannot be 100% sure it will be fine, the streamer says at 500k connections it will be fine, and it won't reach that number. Factor in TVNZ as the obvious backup so it should be fine. That's this is all post other issues, means they benefit from learnings that others have suffered from.

It should be the best that live streaming can be. Another factor is that failure is not really an option, for obvious reasons, so you would expect backup to be there, so that whatever happens, we will see what we want to see

It wasn't just the ad's. It was impossible to know what was on and when, we missed a lot of coverage of sports our people were competing in in favour of events we had no one. We had issues with things like Squash where there was no EPG to determine which channel it would be on, and a number of finals were missed or partly missed.

They simply didn't have the right number of channels. Their online offering was awful too.

There are less "events" at the RWC so presumably easier for them to manage, however, I have seen nothing that indicates that non AB games will be on TVNZ.

Ok, that's coverage rather than video capability. Aside from the Sky guy now hosting Spark Sport and rugby, its one sport and a number of games, its much simpler than CG

I have seen nothing that indicates AB games will be on TVNZ either - they haven't said which games TVNZ is showing except for the first and the last game have they?

A lot of people are assuming that the games TVNZ will show will be the ABs games, but it hasn't (AFAIK) been confirmed.

If that were true, that means that the RWC from an All Blacks view, is all FTA, no need to buy from Spark. With that rationale, I cannot see that being the case.

I have no idea, but I can see them airing 5 non AB games that are of greater interest, such as a tier 1 team in our pool, or who we might meet soon, that type of thing

I doubt TVNZ will show the AB group games live but I think from the quarter finals onwards they will show the ABs live. TVNZ have stated they will show 7 games live which includes the opener and final so the remaining five games will probably be 2 quarter finals, 2 semis and 3rd place game.

You would hope that it at least mirrors the coverage Prime had in 2015:

Prime’s 2015 Rugby World Cup coverage at a glance:

  1. LIVE coverage of the opening ceremony and the first game (England vs Fiji).
  2. Delayed coverage of All Blacks’ pool matches.
  3. Match day highlights of all other games.
  4. LIVE coverage of two quarter finals (including the All Blacks quarter final, should they make it that far), and delayed coverage of the other two quarter finals.
  5. LIVE coverage of one semi-final (including the All Blacks semi-final, should they make it that far), and delayed coverage of the other semi-final.
  6. LIVE coverage of the bronze final.
  7. LIVE coverage of the final.

For some reason, that actually does ring a faint bell. When another poster mentioned 2 games, i did think that I thought it was more from the distant past, but just assumed I was wrong. Wait and see I guess

Heres the TVNZ / Spark Press Release - https://www.tvnz.co.nz/what-to-watch/news-feed/spark-and-tvnz-join-forces-for-rugby-world-cup-2019

Which games will be screened free-to-air via TVNZ?

These details will be released in due course, but we can confirm there will be seven live matches screened free-to-air, and this will include the tournament’s opening match and the final.

What sort of free content might you offer online via the app?

Those details will be released next year, but the content is likely to include – for example – highlights from the week’s play or delayed full match content.

Another question is wether TVNZ will have to "black-out" their TVNZ on-demand live channel streaming , as that would then be competing against the Spark Sport streaming offering

This currently happens in the US - so not unlikely, but hopefully not :)
