I was reluctant to mention the iPad casting in case it was seen as an Android vs Apple debate. It does seem to be the best so far, but early days.

Always seems that NZ companies focus on iOS first rather than both; strange given how many Android units in play there are compared to iPhone/iPads.

Only comment, but I suspect if because it’s easier to manage rather than the varied capabilities, resolutions etc of android phones and tablets. Just imo.

Probably but I'd imagine market penetration larger with Android?  But yes, single ecosystem is mcuh easier, hence why we have major apps (fan pass etc.) on apple TV.  If I could get Steam Link on Apple TV then I'd probably be switching out... although given the amount of media companies shifting to Android TV that we should see some more consistency in this area.

Perhaps I'm an odd user case in that I watch early in the morning before work but not actually at the live point; Sky's use of local storage worked well as I could deal with this almost live but not quite but the Live/VOD switch is proving to be more problematic in this online space as its either too early or too late for me (have to be at work).  If we had carry over of time watched between Live and VOD it wouldn't be a problem as you could switch streams at will but at the moment its etiher watch it on live or watch it VOD, but heaven help if you have an issue with the live play near the end of the allotted time.

That’s a particular problem for Bahrain though isn’t it, because it for no shed at 6am (dst changeover not helping). Where most will have a good couple of hours before viewing due t broadcast In Europe)

I wonder if there are other apps that can deal with this live/vod changeover? Again adding time codes, or a bookmark type feature for a user may help if switching from one to the other?

Yes definitely. And the cheap android tv boxes that are glorified phones with hdmi going away might help. Replaced by consistent android tv devices that know they are a media device, with a remote.

It was particularly bad for Bahrain, but with the new timeslots, most race events will finish around 6am which is 30 minutes too late for me to get the race in before I have to be in work.

I sat down last night and Airplayed the race replay to my AppleTV and everything played flawlessly, including some seeking to get through the ad gaps. Thought I should post my experiences after my earlier complaints with qualifying.

Pulling the 4 hour timeframe down to 32 mins is already quite an achievement in the VOD area in such a short time, tells me things are happening.

Some of the feedback around issues with support raised here has already gone back to the relevant folk too.

not that good when compared to WRC+all live, they have them up almost immediately. (I have this due to SS not standing up until rd 4 of the 14 round season)

@smcc, any idea who provides the WRC+ platform?  TVNZ uses Brightcove so its VOD assets are up almost immediately too.

Interestingly Lightbox moved from xstream to Brightcove - and at the time Sparks' CEO noted Brightcoves capability to handle livestream sport (TVNZ's livestream channels and the Commonwealth Games are probably testament to that too).  And yet SparkSport chose iStreamplanet (F1TV's provider).

sdavisnz: Watched rugby on kayo Sports android tv app last night.
Crystal clear hd.

So we know it's doable.

That explains a lot... I've not heard very positive things about F1TV.

It had a big shocker for the Melbourne race this year - dont know how well it went for Bahrain.

F1TV for AppleTV is still pending (a year after F1TV launched!).  And the reviews for its IOS app are not great.....  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/f1-tv/id1315007279?mt=8

Can't see how they compare. The reviews show F1TV has crashes, there is no Chromecast, and no landscape mode. F1TV is not new, at least when I watch SS on my old iPad, casting to my plasma, its perfect visually and stable and reliable. Yes, there are beta type issues, needs navigation capability for the timeline, i.e. thumbnails.. I can't comment on any Android issues.

EDIT

If I had  remote, such as on an ATV4 app, its Netflix easy

Sorry, I don't know that level of detail I'm afraid.

In 4k UHD, I know where I'm watching the rugby world cup this year.
