spiglord:
I made use of the ‘free’ 24 hour ‘Tiger’ passcode to check out the quality of the PLP service on the weekend, with a view to understanding if the service was good enough to fork out $149 for a season pass. I had previously checked out the quality of the sample stream on my computer monitor, which I didn’t think was representative of what the service would be, so I watched the Spurs v South China on Saturday on my computer and it didn’t look too bad on the 23”screen.
So I rigged up my spare laptop with an HDMI cable to my 55” Samsung LED and fired up the PLP service, and watched the Swansea v Man U game start to finish on Sunday morning, and was generally pleased with the picture quality on such a large screen. Having been a Sky HDi subscriber in the past, the quality was much poorer than what I was previously used to, but it was watchable, even if it did look slightly out-of-focus & washed out at times, (the rain in Wales did not help).
If I am honest, the service was better than I expected, given the lack of a real ‘try-before-you-buy’ samples, and the fact that it was ‘watchable’ on my 55” TV. Once the stream settled down, there was limited blockiness/pixilation, but the judder remained noticeable throughout, which I have become used to when watching poorly streamed content. I also ran a sample of the NFL content at 4500kbps on the 55” TV and as expected, the quality was much improved and the judder less noticeable. IF PLP move to the higher streaming speed, I believe that the quality question will be less of a concern.
So, I gave in a subscribed to PLP….., what choice did I have…?
Being an ardent Spurs supporter I was not prepared to wait 34 hours (!!) for ‘delayed’ coverage on Sky TV, as I much prefer watching ‘pseudo-live’ in the morning a few hours later, so I got up at 5am this morning and watched the VOD Spurs game before work. My experience was similar to the Man U game on Sunday, but my eyes did start to hurt a little during the second half.
Overall, the service is good enough to watch a game or two on the big TV when SkyTV’s coverage is delayed beyond a few hours or days (!), but I don’t think I’ll be using it to watch too many other games until the quality is improved. However, watching on my computer or laptop screen is acceptable for the time being. Given that I paid $127, (with Telecom discount), and that I will probably watch at least 1 game a week, I would say that the PLP service is acceptable at less than $4 per game…..
TL:DR The ‘quality & convenience’ of the PLP is a significant step backwards for watching the English Premier League in New Zealand, and only when PLP acknowledge this fact and start taking positive steps to improve this, will their reputation for only being interested in the $$$ start to improve.

MePLUR: Anyone else notice that even if you set the quality to 3000 Kbps, it still drops to a lower bitrate?
My experience this weekend was disappointing. The stream was constantly buffering when trying to watch the game at 3000 Kbps. Set it to 'Best Available' and this is what I got at the end of the Crystal Palace vs. Tottenham game. Pretty sure it wasn't my internet connection. Did a speed test at the time to a local server and was downloading at 16 Mbps. Even if the content was hosted on an overseas server, I should be able to stream at 3000 Kbps.
PLP needs to do something about the quality of its feeds. Even at 3000 kbps, Sky's SD stream looked less jerky to me.
StarBlazer: Do we know if anyone from PLP is watching this forum? If not that's a missed opportunity.
There is no forum on their site and I couldn't find a Facebook page!
Personally, I'd like to question where they got the average 1.1GB from!

some fiddling around, and I came up with
(400x224) http://nlds5.cdnak.lon.neulion.com/nlds/coliseum/westhamunited/as/live/westhamunited_hd_400.m3u8
(640x360) http://nlds5.cdnak.lon.neulion.com/nlds/coliseum/westhamunited/as/live/westhamunited_hd_800.m3u8

(1280x720) http://nlds5.cdnak.lon.neulion.com/nlds/coliseum/westhamunited/as/live/westhamunited_hd_3000.m3u8
all of which played fine in VLC without logging in.... and could be played by overseas friends with no account.... as did other live games
