SWMBO has decreed that we must all "get fitter". *sigh*

I have successfully argued that measuring metrics and so on will make it (a) more effective and (b) more interesting. Personally I find exercise for the sake of it akin to writing lines for making grammar errors in Latin class as far as interest levels go but there we are, that's just me.

To this end, I have been given the task of choosing a suitable wearable fitness tracker.

Have read heaps of reviews and still not really trimming the list terribly short so I thought I would ask if anyone here has any recommendations.

Ideally it should

    1. Work with iOS/Mac (essential)

    1. Be waterproof (not going to use it as a dive computer but may swim, shower etc)

    1. Count steps/stairs

    1. Have the ability to track walks/runs/cycles on a map using GPS

    1. Have a battery that lasts more than 1 day (looking at you Apple Watch!)

    1. Track sleep and have silent alarm

    1. Function as a watch to at least some extent

    1. Be reasonably wearable as an all day item (i.e. not just when exercising)

My list so far

    1. Fitbit Surge

    1. Garmin Vivoactive

    1. Alcatel Smartwatch

    1. Garmin Vivofit

    1. Garmin Fenix 3 (expensive but does everything but make toast!)

    1. Apple Watch but a distant placing (insanely expensive, looking at the Australian prices - the black steel version is $1600..!)

There's quite a range, some of which are on the list because their gadgetry appeals as much as anything else which is a fine reason for me, even if I only ever take it dog walking, swimming and a gentle bike ride!

It does look nice though - much more me than most of them. I'd probably get the non-pop version for the sapphire crystal.

Maybe I could live without the GPS for something that at least looks normal!!

What most people don't know is the iPhone (The 6 and 6+ maybe other ones) Tracks Most of what you want at the moment (Look in the Health App) ...

All the Apple Watch will give you extra is the Heart Rate as you can see in the forth Panel which you can see which I got last weekend.

Just Having the iPhone in your Pocket will do 95% of what you want. You can just install an App for GPS tracking etc (there are many)

Yes I'm Lazy as you can see :-) The large amount of Steps, walking Distance a week ago was Walking around Sydney CBD and Taronga Zoo last weekend

The Apple Watch (Which only gives you hearth rate) battery life.. Maybe 1 day with Extensive playing with it (the first few days I got it) but Day to Day I get about 2 Days now just.

Pebble

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I second this. I do a lot of running and I find that carrying my iPhone with an armband is quite sufficient. The only disadvantage with this is that I can't see the screen while it's mounted there so I can't check my stats while out in the field, but that's not enough of a problem to make me want to buy a dedicated device.

Android and Windows Phone both do tracking as well, it's not an iPhone only thing.

Fitbit is great because of the gamification angle: friends list, competition during the week, etc.

I have a Fitbit Aria WiFi scales at home and by just walking (and replacing Coca-Cola with Coca-Cola Zero) I was able to lose  9 kilos in the last few months. When there's no Coca-Cola Zero I drink normal coke. Not a completely "OMG, I can't have this or that". I still eat the same as before (meats and pastas being the main staple) but a bit less. And walk an average of 12,000 steps/ daily.

The problem with the Surge is that it's not a good looking watch. It's actually a tracker, it just happens to show the time. You could easily keep it on the right-hand while wearing your watch on the left hand but people will ask why wearing two watches - just tell them to mind their own business.

I wouldn't mind the Withings because that is a good looking watch and would be happy to wear it to a formal occasion or daily.

Microsoft Band via YouShop is another option. Not waterproof but ticks all the other boxes.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I like the Activite - although the lack of night illumination of the face and the 'dumb' nature of the alarm are not plus points, it suits me in most other respects.

I also like the Fenix 3 although it is a bit overkill for an armchair warrior like me!

So few of these things seem to have the design as a factor of 'daily wearability' at their core.

Is there any way to get the Withings without importing personally from elsewhere and dealing with the GST hoopla?

I ordered the Pop through YouShop, ended up costing around $205 NZD delivered so no GST. But are you wanting the premium one? If so, keep in mind that when doing any fitness you'd need to switch to the silicon strap - the leather strap would get ruined pretty fast from sweat, swimming pools etc.

The straps are very easy to change (they have a quick release lever) but still a bit of a hassle to carry around an extra band.

I'd probably do it the other way around - mostly wear it on the silicone band and swap to leather for more formal wear.

There does not seem to be a NZ stockist.

I currently have a Pebble Steel running the Misfit app - works really really well and is accurate, syncs with the app on iOS fine.

The bonus here is you get a full watch + fitness tracker + smartwatch w/ other apps (forever expanding). Also tracks sleep.
