I have successfully argued that measuring metrics and so on will make it (a) more effective and (b) more interesting. Personally I find exercise for the sake of it akin to writing lines for making grammar errors in Latin class as far as interest levels go but there we are, that's just me.
To this end, I have been given the task of choosing a suitable wearable fitness tracker.
Have read heaps of reviews and still not really trimming the list terribly short so I thought I would ask if anyone here has any recommendations.
Ideally it should
- Work with iOS/Mac (essential)
- Be waterproof (not going to use it as a dive computer but may swim, shower etc)
- Count steps/stairs
- Have the ability to track walks/runs/cycles on a map using GPS
- Have a battery that lasts more than 1 day (looking at you Apple Watch!)
- Track sleep and have silent alarm
- Function as a watch to at least some extent
- Be reasonably wearable as an all day item (i.e. not just when exercising)
My list so far
- Fitbit Surge
- Garmin Vivoactive
- Alcatel Smartwatch
- Garmin Vivofit
- Garmin Fenix 3 (expensive but does everything but make toast!)
- Apple Watch but a distant placing (insanely expensive, looking at the Australian prices - the black steel version is $1600..!)
There's quite a range, some of which are on the list because their gadgetry appeals as much as anything else which is a fine reason for me, even if I only ever take it dog walking, swimming and a gentle bike ride!
