Story and podcast on Radio NZ site.

These are sports supplements available over the counter, and a recent report tells us that 95 per cent of elite kiwi athletes use these kind of products.

Apart from the obvious risk to careers, there's a fairly long list of adverse effects - many of which could kill you.

That's very little but over-the-top fear mongering, without mentioning the actual supplements themselves this story is absolute click-bait.

Our legislation doesn't require supps to disclose their ingredients iirc?

There's nothing fear-mongering about that. My link was to a radio NZ article - from a non commercial website - thus "click-bait" is a bit of a strange claim.

Our legislation doesn't allow sale or importing of anabolic steroids without a prescription.

I guess that they haven't named the supplements, for several reasons. One is that if it was known that a certain brand contained anabolic steroids, then there are enough idiots around who'd buy up all available stock - as there's presumably demand.

So I'm guessing all those beagles we see on Border patrol are really not as flash as they make out....:)

IMO, if you take a powder and bulk up like the Hulk, it ain't just got protein in it!

Do they specify the chemicals on the ingredients label?

If they don't then yes they should be named.

I occasionally buy whey protein but generally know what is in it.

Specifying is one thing, true specification is another.

It's very easy to tell - weight training for long time, skinny (but toned) muscles. Take powder, becomes hunk of the year - there's got to be some nice juice in there.

Or if you have good genes, weight trainnig a while, look like brad pitt, take powder, your clothes rip off - that ain't normal.
