3 weeks ago my wife was diagnosed with a very large brain tumor. long story short after a 14 hour surgery it was removed and results have come back that it was Benign.

Its been a massive roller coaster over this time with a lot of sleepless and anxious nights.

I just wanted to say how amazing and lucky we are here in NZ with the medical treatment we can get and the amazing people that go along with it.

A lot of the health system is broken its beyond belief but there are amazing people in it.

My wife is ready to go to Burwood rehab but there are only 14 beds available for under 65 neurological patients and there are 10 people on the waiting list in my wife's ward to go there.

Thank you so much to Emily the amazing surgeon and all the nurses and nurse aids and eveybody involved my family thank you so very much.

I agree @JaseNZ. There are amazing people in our hospitals and clinics who manage to perform miracles within a system that at times seems hell bent on even providing medical care at all.

So glad that your wife has been on the receiving end of such a miracle.

I hope she has a full recovery.

Wow that is amazing!

It is amazing to see the skill of our surgeons, the technology in hospitals and the capabilities it now gives them. Prime example of a job well done!

I hope for a full recovery for you guys and no more medical issues going forward!

I have a question as these things interest me, how was it picked up? Was your wife having issues (headaches, eye sight troubles etc) as that is a bloody big tumor. Very happy for you that it turned out well :)

My friend had the same thing, he was getting migraines. Went in and got a scan last Saturday and had a large tumor, about 40% bigger than this one on the front of his brain. Luckily it was not entangled in his brain and the removed it the next day. He was out of hospital 3 days later, with staples going ear to ear across the top of his head.

I was amazed how big it was before it started to be enough of an issue to be checked out.

So they think she may have had this since birth (she is 53) , but symptoms only started showing up during the last six months. She started showing sign's of like a stroke slurring speech, mobility issues etc, I was very concerned and she went to her GP , she was referred to a neurologist but 4 months went by and nothing, During this time I hounded and hounded them about seeing her to no avail.

She got so bad she could not even get from the bed to couch and her speech was very bad and she was forgetting things.

In the end I threatened to show video of her condition to the media and low and behold an available appointment the very next day became available.

She seen a specialist at 10am on the Monday morning and was admitted to hospital at 11am, 9am that night the MRI was done and 2am a surgeon was at her bedside to tell us the bad news.

The following Monday she was operated on and by Tuesday evening she was sitting up in bed eating some tea and talking.

Speech is returning to normal and she can walk unassisted but needs quite a bit of rehab on her mobility side.

So yeah they really don't know why this would grow its one of those things we just don't fully understand yet.

A lot of the health system is broken its beyond belief but there are amazing people in it.

I do want to say that it's not the people in the Health System that are the cause of the widely reported failures. The people at the coal face are doing everything they can for their patients, often in spite of the system they're working in. The failures are systemic, and there seems to be a disconnect between management and workers. There's a never-ending round of consultants and restructuring and so on that never gets to the root of the problem.

Wow, dodged a bullet.

I can't imagine the stress of those 4 months of waiting to see a specialist.... did you consider paying to see someone earlier? I'm surprised that with serious neurological symptoms that it took so long. Maybe they need more neurologists in the South island!

Thankfully it ended well, if you had not been pushy it could have been a different story!

@jasenz Thanks for answering the question, I am glad she is doing a lot better and got the care she needed.

I know it sounds bad but I am also glad there were signs of things not right, one of the things I fear the most myself is feeling fine and then finding out you have something that big happening.
