Seen this on the news last night.

Is this not the same as having your jaw wired shut or will power to just not eat solids ??

Not a dig at the product was just interested.

It feels like a really good joke that's just gone way too far. And it will end up in a museum with all the other medical devices from decades past that we thought to be revolutionary, but were really just medieval devices made from stainless steel.

I just didn’t get it. If your jaw can override the magnets, what’s to stop you just opening wide and downing a couple of chocolate eclairs? If it’s only an adjunct to willpower, why not just utilise the willpower. Seemed a particularly dumb idea to me - and there were apparently-sane medical academics endorsing it.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

To provide some balance to the sneeringly ignorant comments so far - this device is designed to be used by morbidly obese people scheduled for surgery for a 2-3 week period to facilitate a liquid-only diet and help lose 6-9kg, which improves the safety margins of such surgery significantly.

Hard to see what’s wrong with that.

It appears that, if this device is necessary, there is a significant number of morbidly obese people who do not have the will-power or self-discipline to change their diet for 2-3 weeks prior to presumably life-saving/changing surgery - even when confronted by a surgeon who says ‘it’s essential that you lose 6-9 kg on a liquids-only diet over the next 2-3 weeks or we can’t operate and you may die’. Makes you worry about their ongoing health after the surgery.

That’s why they’re morbidly obese. Perhaps you should inform yourself, even a little bit.

Maybe this is designed to work by scaring the patient:

"stop overeating right now - or we'll have to bung this in your mouth"

If they do use it, better write a bold note on patient's charts to remind them to remove it if they need to do an MRI.

I hope these are well attached/glued. There's a risk here of someone ingesting this device. Strong magnets wreak havoc inside someone's intestine tract - if they get separated and attract each other around bends and corners there is a risk of perforated intestine or bowel where they try to go through the walls and tissues to connect.

Or worse, if the magnets attach themselves and the wearer to a passing bus.

Linking to the articles informing your balance would also make your own comment far less derisive and condescending. Can you please provide your source for this information as that isn't what the article posted states.

“It is a non-invasive, reversible, economical and attractive alternative to surgical procedures." “The fact is, there are no adverse consequences with this device.” "Brunton said the '’beauty'' of the device was patients could have the magnets disengaged after a couple of weeks." “This would allow for a phased approach to weight loss supported by advice from a dietician allowing long-term weight loss goals to be realised.”

If there was more information as you described above it would make the article far more interesting and useful.

Maybe we could just put these people in a padded locked room for 2 weeks on a strictly controlled diet? 🤣

I know two people who have had gastric band surgery due to morbid obesity.

They not only have to reduce their weight prior to the surgery and live on a liquid diet pre-surgery, they have to severely limit their eating afterward, as they can get quite ill from overeating. Their portions post-surgery are tiny and while they do lose weight, it's torture for a lifetime over-eater.

The habits of a lifetime are very hard to break and they don't really enjoy mealtimes anymore (they are a couple, obviously).

I just don't know how well something like this would work, if it also involves a certain amount of willpower...
