Well I would say I have "fairly" sensitive skin and reasonably soft facial hair. The key for me was OIL, I can't highly enough speak of it. I shower/shave under very hot water. I shave my upper lip alternative days and I don't shave in weekends. I have used most razers from mach3 all the way to the 5 blade I use now. I get about a month of daily shaving from that or more, but toward the end it's a little blunt. I also shave against the grain since I want a completely smooth face.

I've got a beard so I only need to trim once a week or so and tidy up around my throat. But before I grew the beard I used disposable razors without too much trouble (after my Dad gave me a father / son talk and explained all the ins and outs!)

For my beard I use an electric trimmer but when traveling I forgo that and take a disposable razor and oil (a small bottle of oil is easier than taking cans of foam and you can get oil in most supermarkets).

Have a look on Youtube for some tutorials on how to shave.

I am pretty much the same as the OP, but a year ago I switched to a safety blade setup from http://mancave.co.nz/ which is very cheap for blades and gives a less irritating and closer shave than the 3/4/5 blade thingys from the supermarket.

More generally - the primal earth range of shaving cream works wonders for my sensitive skin, and figuring exactly which way the grain goes in each area of your face (which can be left-right not always up-down) works wonders

I had similar issues to the OP but after a stint in Harrods in London as a xmas temp in their mens grooming department I found somethings that worked for me:

1) Always try to shave with hot water, even better if you can shave after,or during, a hot shower. The heat opens the hair folicles and softens the hair.

2) Shaving soap.- this has to be the best thing, although i haven't tried oil. It is hard to find in NZ but body shop do a shaving cream that when you leave the top off will go hard. I shave 5-6 times a week and $30 pottle will last about 6 months. Also it seems to help the blades last longer. A mach3 will last me at least three weeks, with foam i was lucky to get two weeks

3) a calming balm or moisturiser. I used these for a while, but found after awhile i didn't need them any more

I gave up shaving for the reaosns commonly outilined above and have a permanent stubble.

I trim the stubble once a week with a trimmer, and this is grand.

I've tried a bunch of methods - electric, gillette, schick - and i've settled on the KOS Azor razor for price & performance coupled with the Nivea sensitive shaving gel, or the KOS cooling gel

best tip is to shave in the shower, wet face & put gel on first thing, then wait for 5 minutes (or as long as poss) before shaving

used blades for many many years and thought they were ok. Used various - twin, tripple etc . . . .
Tried out a rather expensive philishave and was completely unsatisfied.
Went back to blades and then gave braun and remmington shavers a go.
The remmington foil was the one I liked the best (even more than blades) until my current shaver - Izumi (formerly Seiko). Gives me the closest rash free shave I have ever had.

I want to try a safety razor but why does an all stainless one cost $350.00. Or am i just looking at the rolex version. http://www.mancave.co.nz/products/shaving/razors/safety-razors/feather-all-stainless-safety-razor

I cannot seem to find a cheaper all stainless one. If I am going to be using it for along time I want a good one that isnt going to turn to rubbish after years of being in contact with water/soap/air but $350.00 is ridiculous for something which cost about $25.00 to produce.

I get a few months out of a blade on my gilette razor. I generally shave in the shower right after washing my face which should soften things up a bit.

My King of shaves has finally worn out to the point of uselessness and I can't find replacements anywhere, shame.

I think I've got fairly tough skin as I frequently "can't be bothered" and will do a completely dry shave with a frequently far-from-new blade and I don't have any issues.

I have used all types of razors.... twin, triple...... mach 17!!!!! but I found I used to get ingrown hairs, and shaving rash etc.

Also, I used to get about a week out of a super expensive blade before it was too blunt to use.

Tried electric shavers (bought an expensive philips a few years back) and found that I had to wail on my face for 15-20 minutes to get anything close to a decent shave.... felt like a plucked chicken after that!

Finally I switched to a safety razor about 6 months ago and haven't looked back since.... the blades last a month (and if you buy a 100 pack they are about 30 -70 cents each), I haven't had a single ingrown hair, and razor burn is a thing of the past.

I went the whole hog and use a brush and old school shaving cream that you have to work into a lather.... for me at least, this is the holy grail of shaving.

Plenty of sites on the net advocating it, and reviewing various types of blades brushes and creams etc if anyone is interested.

You can make your blades last a lot longer by not storing them in the shower. Dry your razor off and keep it somewhere dry.

But I'm probably not qualified to answer, I have a 13 inch beard, haha.
